Whether you’re looking to build essential lifesaving skills or ready to explore ocean depths, the Cal Poly Recreation Center offers a variety of certification courses for winter quarter 2026. Choose from CPR/First–Aid/AED, Lifeguarding, or Scuba certification courses!
American Red Cross Adult/Pediatric CPR/First Aid/AED
Build essential emergency response skills in this interactive blended learning course. Participants will complete online modules before attending a hands on in person session. Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a 2-year American Red Cross certification in Adult and Pediatric CPR/First Aid/AED.

Get the information you need to confidently respond to aquatic emergencies with this in–depth lifeguarding certification course. This blended learning course includes online lessons plus three in-person sessions focused on emergency response, water rescue skills, CPR, AED, and First Aid.

Course Schedule:
- Online portion must be completed before in person training begins (link sent by Feb. 23)
- In–person Sessions:
- Session 1: Friday, March 6 from 6–9:30 p.m.
- Session 2: Saturday, March 7 from 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
- Session 3: Sunday, March 8 from 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
Prerequisites:
- Swim Sequence: Swim 150 yards, tred water for 2 minutes (using legs only, swim 50 yards)
- Timed event: 1 minute and 40 seconds to swim 20 yards, surface dive to retrieve a 10 lb. brick from 7 feet deep, swim back 20 yards while holding the brick, and exit without ladder or step
All sessions will take place at the Cal Poly Recreation Center Lap Pool and Training Room. Participants should be prepared for both water-based and classroom instruction each day.
PADI SCUBA Certification Class
Take your adventure underwater! This beginner Scuba course includes online training, pool sessions, and ocean dives— taught by professionals from SLO Ocean Currents. Upon completion, participants receive PADI Open Water Diver Certification.

- Pool Session: Sunday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Recreation Center Lap Pool
- Ocean Dives: Saturday–Sunday, Feb. 7–8 all day
Session 2:
- Registration Opens: Jan. 5 at midnight
- Meet & Greet: Wednesday, March 4 from 6–8 p.m. in the Cal Poly Recreation Center Training Room
- Pool Session: Sunday, March 8 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Recreation Center Lap Pool
- Ocean Dives: Saturday–Sunday, March 14–15 all day
Requirements:
- Complete medical waiver prior to meet and greet
- Attend all sessions (online, pool, and ocean) to earn certification
