Exercise Areas

Overview

The Cal Poly Recreation Center consists of over 20,000 square feet of exercise space with a comprehensive mix of cardio and strength equipment to accommodate a wide range of participants’ needs. Each of the three specific exercise areas features inclusive environments that include free weights, circuit training machines, cardio equipment, and warm-up/cool-down areas.

  • Upper Exercise Room: 9500 sq. ft.
  • Track Exercise Room: 3500 sq. ft.
  • Lower Exercise Room: 7500 sq. ft.

Recharge

The Recreation Center also has several areas to study, socialize, or just relax. From comfy couches to bean bags and high-top study tables, to ping pong and large display televisions, we’ve got a recharge area for everyone.

Studios

The Recreation Center has three dedicated studios offering a variety of programs.

Studio 1

A dedicated cycling studio with a class capacity of 40 participants.

Studio 2

The primary space for yoga, pilates, and ab workouts.

Studio 3

Largest studio used for group exercise classes such as Body Pump and Zumba.

Gymnasiums

Main Gym

This large two-court gym, located on the west side of the first floor, consists of two full-court basketball courts or three volleyball courts. It can also be converted to a main spectator single court for basketball or volleyball. This is the primary gym for Intramural Sports and Kinesiology.

Rec Gym

The primary informal/open gymnasium, located across from the main entrance, consists of two full-court basketball or three volleyball court configurations.

North Gym

Located on the north-west side of the second floor, this single court is configured for basketball or volleyball but can also be used for badminton, dodgeball, pickleball, and futsal.

South Gym

Located on the south-west side of the second floor, this single court is configured for basketball or volleyball but can also be used for dodgeball, and futsal.

Open Recreation

The Cal Poly Recreation Center gyms are open for sport-specific open recreation times throughout the week!

Multi-Activity Center (MAC)

The MAC is available for badminton, dodgeball, fitness classes and special events. The MAC can be configured for three badminton courts or three dodgeball courts. For events, the MAC features state-of-the-art sound and lighting system and can be configured with a stage, conference tables, or as a general large meeting auditorium.

Recreation Center

Mat Room

The Mat Room provides a matted space for specialized fitness classes such as Shori Ryu Karate and TRX. This space is also utilized as a practice space for the Cal Poly Wrestling team.

Indoor Track

The 3-lane indoor track is located on the second floor and loops around the Rec Gymnasium courts and exercise areas for warm-up/cool-down and circuit training. The track measures 1/8 of a mile per lap, and the inner lanes are for faster runners/joggers.

Racquetball Courts

Six glass-walled racquetball courts, with one having the capability to be converted to a squash court, are located on the first floor across from the Lower Exercise Area. Courts 1 through 5 can also be converted to Wallyball.
