Make Your Mark—Student Artists Wanted for the “Raíces de Nuestra Comunidad” Installation

|

The ASI Craft Center and ASI Inclusive Excellence in collaboration with Cultural & Institutional Excellence (CIX), are launching an exciting new 2D art installation project! We’re looking for a currently enrolled Cal Poly student to bring the Raíces de Nuestra Comunidad (Roots of Our Community) art installation to life.

This art piece will celebrate Latinx cultural iconography, artistic expression and the vibrant stories of the Latinx diaspora that continue to shape and strengthen our campus community. This could be your chance to create something that is everlasting.

The Project:

Upon selection, the student artist will transfer the approved concept onto a canvas, which will then be installed within a designated space inside the ASI Craft Center starting summer quarter 2026. The installation will be displayed throughout the 2026–27 academic year. The wall space is a horizontal layout that measures 122 inches (w) by 77 inches (h), giving artists a substantial canvas to imagine something bold, meaningful and community-centered.

A $2,000 grant was provided to support the funding of materials and production costs for the artwork installation.

How to Apply:

Students must complete the official application form here: Artist Submission Form

As part of the application, you will be asked to submit:

  • A portfolio of original artwork
  • A proposed design concept
  • A 250–500 word written statement outlining artistic vision and proposed materials plan
  • Confirmation of availability in San Luis Obispo during the 2026 spring and summer quarters

Applications are due April 12, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee composed of representatives from ASI Craft Center, ASI Inclusive Excellence, La Casa, and The Dream Center.

All currently enrolled Cal Poly students are encouraged to apply. ASI celebrates diverse cultural identities and experiences and is committed to fostering welcoming, inclusive spaces rooted in respect, equity and advocacy.

All students, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin, who are interested in the installation and focus are welcome to apply. We celebrate the diverse cultural identities and experiences of all students and foster a welcoming and inclusive community space. Our work is rooted in respect, equity, and advocacy.
