Ready to dive in this fall? ASI Aquatics at the Cal Poly Recreation Center is offering multiple certification courses to help you gain lifesaving skills to take your water adventures to the next level. Get CPR certified, become a lifeguard, or earn your Scuba certification this fall.
American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
Gain lifesaving skills through the American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric CPR/First Aid/AED certification course. This blended learning course combines online lessons with in-person sessions, which teach participants how to respond to medical emergencies. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certification valid for 2 years.

Offering 1:
- Online session must be completed between Sept. 29–Oct. 8
- In-person session will be held on Oct. 8 from 6:30–9:30 p.m.
- Registration closes Sept. 28 at 5 p.m.
Offering 2:
- Online session must be completed between Oct. 27–Nov. 5
- In-person session will be held on Nov. 5 from 6:30–9:30 p.m.
- Registration closes Oct. 26 at 5 p.m.
Offering 3:
- Online session must be completed between Nov. 24–Dec. 5
- In-person session will be held on Dec 5. from 6:30–9:30 p.m.
- Registration closes Nov. 23 at 5 p.m.
Lifeguarding Certification Class
Learn to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies with the Lifeguarding Certification class. This course provides participants with the knowledge and confidence to handle critical situations in and around the water, preparing them to act quickly and provide effective care.
- Cost: $225
- Registration opens: Sept. 15 at 8 a.m.
- Registration closes: Sept. 28 at 5 p.m.
Prerequisites:
- Swim Sequence: Swim 150 yards, tred water for 2 minutes (using legs only, swim 50 yards
- Timed event: 1 minute and 40 seconds to swim 20 yards, surface dive to retrieve a 10 lb. brick from 7 feet deep, swim back 20 yards while holding the brick, and exit without ladder or steps
Course format:
This is a blended learning course, with an online portion completed prior to in-person sessions.
- Online access: Link sent by Sept. 29 and must be completed before the first in-person session
In-person Session:
- Session 1: Oct. 10 from 6–9:30 p.m.
- Session 2: Oct. 11 from 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
- Session 3: Oct. 12 from 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
All sessions will take place at the Cal Poly Recreation Center Lap Pool and Training Room. Participants should be prepared for both water-based and classroom instruction each day.
PADI Scuba Certification Class
Get certified to explore the underwater world with this beginner Scuba course taught by SLO Ocean Currents. This certification experience consists of online modules, pool sessions, and ocean dives.
- Cost: $420
- Eligibility: ASI Recreation Center Members only, 10 spots per session
- Required Equipment (not provided):
- Mask and snorkel
- Dive fins with heel strap
- Dive computer
- Booties and gloves
- Optional: Dive bag
Equipment available for purchase or rental through SLO Ocean Currents.

- Complete medical waiver prior to meet and greet
- Attend all sessions (online, pool, and ocean) to earn certification

- Registration opens: Sept. 15 at 7 a.m.
- Meet & Greet: Oct. 15 from 6–8 p.m. in the Admin Suite (Building 43, room 132)
- Pool Session: Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Recreation Center Lap Pool
- Ocean Dives: all day Oct. 25–26
Session 2:
- Registration opens: Sept. 15 at 7 a.m.
- Meet & Greet: Oct. 29 from 6–8 p.m. in the Admin Suite (Building 43, room 132)
- Pool Session: Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. –5 p.m. at the Cal Poly Recreation Center Lap Pool
