“All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution,” according to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC). As part of the ILRC’s educational materials, the non-profit organization has created red cards that state an individual’s rights and protections under the Fourth and Fifth Amendments.
The red card comes in many different languages and is intended to be used to inform the users, regardless of immigration status, of their constitutional rights when dealing with immigration enforcement officers. The card can also be handed to officers in place of speaking with them––ensuring that individuals are not compelled to share any information beyond what is required by law. Cards are available to all community members and are intended to be used and shared.
Locations where “Know Your Rights” red cards are available:
- The Student Government office (Building 65, Room 202)
- The University Union Facility Supervisor/Welcome desk
- ASI Business Office front desk
- Recreation Center Membership Services desk
- ASI Children’s Center front desk
By distributing these cards and connecting individuals with legal resources, ASI aims to foster an environment where everyone can feel confident in their rights and their safety. Together, we stand stronger when we stand informed. Grab a red card today, spread the word, and protect yourself and others!
