Endorsement of Short Range Transit Plans

|

The ASI Board of Directors is proud to endorse the San Luis Obispo Transit Short Range Transit Plan for Fiscal Years 2025–26 through 2031–32. The proposed plan enhances public transportation service citywide, including increased service to and from Cal Poly, which directly impacts and benefits students. Co-authored by Olivia Short, Aaron Posternack, Yiming Luo, Trey Bernard, and Eva Robin, this endorsement illustrates the support that Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) has for programs that improve and increase efficient transportation on and off campus for Cal Poly students.

The endorsement reflects ASI’s continued support of efficient, accessible, and sustainable transportation options for the Cal Poly student body. In particular, the plan addresses a growing concern: overcrowding on SLO Transit buses during peak morning and evening hours. With a recorded 125,030 Cal Poly riders using the service from 2024–25, ridership has significantly increased, while bus frequencies have remained unchanged.

The final version of the Short Range Transit Plan aims to reinstate pre-COVID routes such as the 6X, Highland Tripper, and SLO Tripper which will allow for increased transportation of students from living areas in the city to campus. The transit plan will also increase the frequency of route 4A/4B, which are the most used routes by Cal Poly students, during the academic year.

Secretary of Student Experience, Trey Bernard stated, “I am extremely grateful I had the opportunity this year to collaborate with members on the Board of Directors on this endorsement. I think a strength of ASI Student Government this year has been the countless examples of cross-branch collaboration on various projects and initiatives, and this proves that. This endorsement helps to shape a better community for years to come, addressing important problems surrounding overcrowding, delays, and lack of transportation frequency. This also sets the groundwork for building better connections with the City of San Luis Obispo and Transportation and Parking Services.”

Board of Directors representative — College of Architecture and Environmental Design, Aaron Posternack stated, “Ever since I came to Cal Poly, I have always thought that there is so much opportunity for better public transit in San Luis Obispo. Seeing and experiencing the overcrowding students suffer because of the overcrowding, delays, and lack of frequency pushed me over the edge. At the same time, I wanted to find solutions to Cal Poly’s transportation problems rather than condemn the (now delayed) seven-day parking plan the Parking and Transportation Committee proposed. Working with others who felt passionate about this issue was truly an amazing experience and it tested how I could lead the effort towards getting better public transit here. I hope that this endorsement is a first step that future Boards can build on to further call for improvements to public transit.”

ASI’s endorsement signals strong student support for a better-connected, more accessible, and sustainable campus and city. The improvements will support academic success, reduce commute-related stress, and promote environmental responsibility.
