Cal Poly Letter Installation

|

Just in time for commencement — and obligatory selfies — a new installation of nearly nine-foot-tall Cal Poly letters has been placed near the University Union Plaza.

The Hollywood-sign style letters that stand 8 feet, 9 inches tall were strategically placed between the University Union and the 1901 Marketplace dining complex to create an accessible backdrop for the Cal Poly community and visitors to safely take photos demonstrating Cal Poly pride. The installation features color-changing lights that will be on timers throughout the evenings.

“The letters are amazing,” said agricultural science senior Gennevie Galdamez. “I think it will be a great spot for people proud of campus to take photos. As a graduate myself, I can’t wait to take photos in front of them in my cap and gown.”

The permanent installation was a collaborative effort among the ASI University Union Advisory Board (UUAB), Cal Poly Administration and Finance and University Communications and Marketing.

After four years of planning and collaboration, the project came to fruition in time to add to the pride and excitement of the upcoming commencement.

“We look forward to the positive impact this installation will have within our campus community,” said Aaron Fernandes, 2023–24 chair of the UUAB. “Especially as we celebrate and show our collective commitment to being Cal Poly Proud.”

The installation is part of a larger, planned two-phase project that will update landscaping to the area and enhance the campus experience.
