Recreation Center Facility Sustainability Practices
Cal Poly Recreation Center Facility Sustainability Practices:
Pool Operations
- 50-meter Lap Pool capacity 582,500 gallons
- Leisure Pool capacity is 160,000 gallons
- Filtration: Remove contaminants in the water
- Use of multi-cell high rate sand filters
- Integrated backwash system
- Stainless steel strainer baskets
- Backwashing filters every two to three weeks, instead of every week. Saving 3,200 gallons of water on average.
- Sanitation: Sanitizer/oxidizer to kill bugs and destroy organics. Compounds to aid in maintaining pool water PH balance.
- An automated controller system ensures that the system is regulating preventing the overuse of chemicals.
- Bulk Storage reduces emissions from car transport of chemicals.
- Sodium Hypochlorite (Chlorine) 1,000-gallon tank.
- Hydrochloric Acid, 500-gallon tank.
- Our system reduces the use of acid introducing CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) into the system. When you put CO2 in your swimming pool, you’ll be reducing the carbon footprint of the pool. Your pool won’t produce as many greenhouse gases. Studies also indicate that pools that switch from hydrochloric acid to CO2 don’t consume as much chlorine.
- Heating: Heat Exchangers
- Consistently covering pools at night with thermal insulated tarps to reduce chemical burn-off and loss of heat.
- High limit switches, flow meters, and temperature gauges help to efficiently monitor and manage heat.
- Actuator control valves for the gradual increase of heat.
- Average temps for the Lap Pool is 80 degrees and the Leisure Pool is 82 degrees.
- Circulation: Pool water continues to circulate from the pool to the water treatment system and back to the pool continuously, time and time again.
- Turnover rate: Pool operating code requires that all water in a pool is circulated within a six-hour period while the pool is open.
- Use of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Smart Pump system. Motors will ramp down at night while pools are closed to reduce energy use.
- Cantilever gutter system reduces water splashing out of pool, therefore, reducing water and chemical consumption and energy needed to heat new water.
- Maintenance-Preventive Maintenance
- Underwater LED lights, drip system in planter areas, reduce water usage during winter for landscaping.
- Maintenance technicians monitoring pools 7 days a week ensures efficient monitoring of pool systems.
Fitness and Exercise Equipment
- Maintenance:
- On-site maintenance technicians and repair shop to minimize downtime of equipment and also save money by not relying on outside vendors or company technicians to repair our own equipment.
- Quarterly equipment service is completed to inspect all equipment on the exercise floors in order to repair and also to determine that equipment is safe for participant usage.
- Preventative maintenance and inspections are done weekly to continue to service equipment.
- Equipment:
- (34) Woodway treadmill units conserve energy by using ball bearings under the slates to minimize friction during use.
- (1) Woodway curve non-powered unit uses no power and is powered by the participant.
- Equipment powered by a generator with participant input.
- (10) Life Fitness Upright/Recumbent bikes
- (15) Precor Upright/Recumbent bikes
- (20) Precor Ellipticals
- (8) Cybex Arc Trainers
- (2) Sci-Fit arm bikes
