Makers Market FAQs
Who is eligible to participate?
We only showcase crafts made by the artists themselves. Thrifted items, food, and drinks are not permitted. If you’re unsure if your work qualifies, contact the Craft Center at (805) 756-1266 or asicraftcenter@calpoly.edu.
How do I apply?
All prospective vendors must complete the online application then submit a signed and dated W-9 form to asicraftcenter@calpoly.edu. Once accepted, pay the $15 registration fee to the Craft Center front desk (card or Apple Pay only).
What are the fee and commission rates?
- $15 entry fee (to be paid after acceptance, but before the Market)
- 15% commission on sales for student vendors
- 25% commission on sales for non-student vendors
How are vendors selected?
Applications are generally first-come, first-served. Decisions may be made based on vendor availability across the 3-day event, craft category capacity, or inventory stock. We have the capacity for ~40 vendors, and will create a waitlist in case vendors drop out before the sale. If accepted vendors have low inventory, they may share a table with another vendor.
What are vendors responsible for?
- Each vendor is responsible for set-up and cleanup of their own booth. Vendors are not expected to staff their table for the entire duration of the event. However, all vendors are asked to volunteer 2-4 hours total to monitor tables during the Market.
- All vendors must attend a pre-sale meeting to discuss logistics and prep.
- All vendors must individually tag and price each item for sale.
What is the Craft Center responsible for?
- The Craft Center will provide 6’ round tables with black tablecloths. Chairs will be provided for you upon request if you choose to staff your booth during the sale.
- The Craft Center is not responsible for lost or stolen merchandise during the sale.
- The Craft Center will staff employees at two registers to complete all transactions.
- The Craft Center will provide limited storage for inventory between sales days – first come, first served, and at your own risk.
- The Craft Center will share daily sales reports, a comprehensive sales report, and will have checks ready for pickup ~2 weeks after the sale.
What payment methods are accepted?
We can only accept cards and Apple Pay. We do not accept cash, check, or Venmo.
What are the tax implications of participating?
Individuals selling any craft, whether through a business or as an individual hobby, must pay taxes on net earnings over $400. Read more on the IRS website. If you have questions, you may seek assistance from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at Cal Poly.
What is the audience and how should I price my items?
Markets are typically attended by majority Cal Poly students; however, faculty and staff do also shop. It is suggested to have a price range to capture both audiences.
What are tips for successful displays?
- Make it your own! We provide a black tablecloth, but consider bringing your own colorful cloth/decorations to make it stand out.
- We recommend building vertically, to catch shoppers’ eyes, rather than laying everything flat on the table.
