Water Competency Requirement

  • All individuals who utilize the Recreation Center Lap Pool and/or Leisure Pool must be able to demonstrate water competency. This competency can be demonstrated by swimming one length of the pool (25 yards) without assistance and treading water for a minimum of 30 seconds with the individual’s head remaining above the pool surface at all times. Any individual that cannot demonstrate their water competency shall remain in the shallow area of either pool (4ft depth or less) and must have a water-competent adult within arm’s length anytime they are in the water.
  • ASI Aquatics staff are trained to recognize unsafe water competency. If an ASI Aquatics staff member observes a potential safety concern, they are permitted to request a water competency test (as recommended by the American Red Cross). Failure to comply with the request to perform the water competency test will result in immediate removal from the water, until which time a water competency test is completed, and the individual has demonstrated that they meet the water competency standards.
  • If it is determined through a water competency test performed by an ASI Aquatics staff member, that a water competent adult is required to accompany a current Recreation Center member in the pool, that individual will not be required to purchase a Recreation Center membership. Access to the Recreation Center will be limited to times that the water-competent individual is serving in this specific capacity. An ASI liability release waiver will be required to be on file for the competent adult.
