ASI Intramural Futsal Rules
- The Game
- Start Time
- All players must check in with the ASI Intramural Sports supervisor before the game with their unique IMLeagues Virtual ID Card and any valid PHYSICAL photo ID.
- Game time is forfeit If the minimum number of players are not present at game time, the game will be forfeited. Please refer to the ASI Intramural Sports Handbook for the forfeit policy description.
- The Players
- The game shall be played by two teams of 5
- The minimum number of players to start a match is three, one of whom shall be a
- Three (3) players are required at the start of game time to avoid a
- If a team has two or fewer players at game time, that team will be assessed a forfeit fee.
- If at any time during the game a team has fewer than three eligible players, the game is over, and the win is awarded to the opposing team.
- Substitution Limit: None.
- Substitution Method: “Flying substitution” (all players including the goalkeeper enter and leave as they please through the substitution area). The player leaving the game must be completely off the court before the new player enters.

- Manager Meeting
- Prior to the start of the game, a meeting between the two team managers and the official will take place. They will discuss rules and regulations which the manager must relay back to the Managers will play rock, paper, scissors to determine who gets the first possession.
- If both team managers agree and an official approves the ball, a futsal ball brought by the players may be used.
- Team Spokesperson
- The team manager is the only person who may address the official and is the spokesperson for the team.
- The Court
- Games will take place at the Upper Sports Complex when weather permits. When rain or other bad weather occurs, managers must look for emails regarding a change in location. If no email is sent, assume the game will continue as scheduled at the Upper Sports Complex.
- To ensure the safety of participants and staff, the maximum capacity for each team, including spectators, is 15 people. Only during playoffs may this number be exceeded at the discretion of the Intramural Sports supervisor.
- Player Restrictions
- Participants may only play on one team per sport per For example, you may only be on one team in volleyball D1 competition.
- Club sport players are only allowed to play in ‘Division Competitive’ or the highest competitive division There may only be two club players on the court at a time, but there is no limit to the number of club players on a team.
- A participant who appears on a club sports roster at any time during the academic year will be considered a club player for the sport similar to their Cal Poly club sport the remainder of that academic year
- Intercollegiate athletes may not participate in a sport similar to their Cal Poly sport until a minimum of three academic quarters (not including summer) after they have been removed from that sport’s active roster. However, they are eligible to play an Intramural Sport dissimilar to the sport they played for Cal Poly.
- Equipment/Dress Code
- Uniform
- The ‘home’ team wears white and the ‘away’ team wears black.
- Players must check their schedules on IMLeagues to know which color shirt to wear. If there is any doubt, bring both colors.
- No gray or yellow shirts may be worn.
- If every member of the team has the same uniform, they will be allowed to play at the discretion of the supervisor.
- A player with blood anywhere on their uniform will be instructed to leave the game until the uniform has been changed or approved after an evaluation by an ASI Intramural Sports supervisor or an ASI facility supervisor.

- Dress Code
- Closed toe shoes must be worn at all times during play.
- Athletic attire must be worn at all times during play.
- Wearing a hat is not allowed during play.
- Intramural officials can remove a player for improper attire at their discretion.

- Jewelry is not permitted; players must remove all jewelry before the start of a game.

8. Administrative Fouls and Penalties

- Spectators
- Spectators who interfere with the court or play are subject to ejection from the Upper Sports Complex and may have their Recreation Center Membership suspended.
- Team managers are responsible for their spectators. Poor spectator behavior WILL cause a team to receive a low behavior rating.
- Ultimately, it is at the discretion of the IM Futsal Supervisor and/or the Facility Supervisor(s) as to whether a spectator will be permitted to remain at the sports complex.

- Zero Tolerance Policy
- There is no alcohol or drugs allowed at ASI Intramural Sports games. If a player or fan is under the influence, they will be ejected immediately, and disciplinary action may follow. If an ASI Intramural Sports supervisor feels that there is a threat to participant safety or suspects that a team might be under the influence, they are required to stop the game immediately. If there is no proof of substance use, the game will be rescheduled for another time.
- Sportsmanship Ratings
- Teams receive a Sportsmanship Rating 1 through 5 for each of their games, rated by the officials managing the game. Teams begin with a score of 4, the baseline, and their score is affected by their behavior throughout the game. The Sportsmanship Rating Scale is outlined in the following subsection “Sportsmanship Rating Scale.”
- Teams are required to have a sportsmanship average rating of 3 to qualify for playoffs.

Five (5): Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship
- Team members cooperate with and demonstrate good sportsmanship toward teammates, opponents, and all members of the Intramural Sports staff.
- Team captain exhibits control over his/her teammates and spectators; they converse calmly and rationally with officials regarding the interpretation of calls.
- Team members demonstrate proper respect for all equipment and the

- The minimum number of team members needed to start the contest is present, checked in, and ready to play prior to game time. Teams who do not meet this standard are ineligible to receive a 5.0 rating.
Four (4): Good Conduct and Sportsmanship (Teams Begin at this Level)
- Team members exhibit good conduct and sportsmanship for most of the contest.
- Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by officials and/or show minor dissension which does not merit a technical foul/unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
- Team members do not show aggressive dissent toward the Intramural Sports staff or the opposing team.
Three (3): Average Conduct and Sportsmanship
- Team shows verbal dissent toward officials and/or the opposing team which may or may not result in a technical foul/unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
- Teams who receive multiple technical fouls/unsportsmanlike conduct penalties may not receive higher than a 3.0 rating.
- Team captain demonstrates minor control over teammates/spectators and/or does not actively promote good sportsmanship.
- Team members occasionally use profanity, although it is not directed toward staff/opponents. At game time, the team is not able to produce the minimum number of participants, resulting in a forfeit. The opposing team will automatically receive a 4.0 rating in this situation.
Two (2): Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship
- Team members continuously show dissent toward staff/opponents or use abusive/inappropriate language toward staff/opponents.
- Team members are continuously “trash talking” opponents and/or intimidating staff/opponents or playing dangerously/maliciously.
- The team captain is unresponsive and uncooperative in helping staff members to control teammates.
- Teams that have a player ejected may not receive higher than a 2.0 rating.
One (1): Disqualifying Conduct and Sportsmanship
- Threatening/making physical contact in an aggressive manner toward staff/opponents. Team members are out of control, intoxicated/under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, or show a complete disregard for authority. The team captain shows no control over the actions of his/her teammates.
- Multiple players are ejected from the contest.
- A team member misrepresents him/herself by using another student’s ID card.
- Team members damage/attempt to damage equipment or the facility.
- An ineligible player participates in the game.
- Any team whose member(s) take part in a fight, instigates a fight, or throws a punch (whether connected or not) will receive a 1.0 and those individual players will be indefinitely suspended from all Intramural Sports events. Those members must meet with the Intramural Sports Coordinator before they will be allowed to resume participation in any intramural sports event. Any team that receives 1.0 is subject to disqualification from participation for the remainder of that sport and possibly the semester or academic year. All players on a team receiving a 1.0 may be put on probation or suspended indefinitely and may be subject to further sanctions through Judicial Affairs.
- Participant Conduct
- Profanity, taunting, verbal abuse of officials and unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. This applies to participants and spectators.
- Fighting will not be tolerated.
- Ejected players will not be allowed to participate in any Intramural Sports programming until a meeting has been conducted with the appropriate sport supervisor and any additional penalties have been served.
- Duration of the Game
- Duration: Two equal periods of 20 minutes
- Time-outs: 1 per team per half; none in extra time. Must be taken during a dead ball
- Half-time: 2 minutes
- Ball in and out of Play
- Ball out of play:
- When it has completely crossed the goal line or touchline.
- When the game has been stopped by a referee.

14. Method of Scoring

- When the whole of the ball has passed over the goal line, between the goal posts, and under the crossbar (except by illegal means).
15. Fouls and Misconduct
-
- Direct free kick awarded when a player intentionally commits any of the following offenses:
- Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent
- Tripping an opponent
- Jumping at an opponent
- Charging an opponent in a violent or dangerous manner
- Charging an opponent from behind
- Striking, attempting to strike or spitting at an opponent
- Holding an opponent
- Pushing an opponent
- Charging an opponent with shoulder (i.e., shoulder charge)
- Sliding at an opponent (i.e., sliding tackle)
- Handling the ball (except goalkeeper)
- Dangerous play (e.g. attempting to kick ball held by goalkeeper)
- Obstruction
- Charging the goalkeeper in the penalty area (i.e., goalkeeper charge)
- Goalkeeper throws ball directly over the halfway line (without it first touching his own side of the pitch or any player)
- Goalkeeper picks up or touches with his hands, a back pass
- Goalkeeper picks up or touches with his hands, a kick-in from a teammate
- Goalkeeper controls the ball with any part of his body for more than four seconds
- Goalkeeper touches with any part of his body, a back pass that has been played back to him before the ball has (1) crossed the halfway-line or (2) been touched by an opponent
- Players shall be cautioned (i.e., shown yellow card) when:
- A substituting player enters the pitch from an incorrect position or before the player he is substituting has entirely left the pitch
- He persistently infringes the ‘Laws of the Game’
- He shows dissent with any decision of the referee
- He is guilty of ungentlemanly conduct
- Direct free kick awarded when a player intentionally commits any of the following offenses:
16. Players shall be sent off the court (i.e., shown the red card) for:

- Serious foul play
- Violent conduct
- Foul or abusive language
- Second instance of a cautionable offense (i.e., second yellow card)
- Intentionally impeding a clear goal opportunity (e.g. through a “professional foul”)
- Intentionally impeding a clear goal opportunity in the penalty area by handling the ball
Direct free kicks (or penalty kicks) accompany all expulsions
- Rules of Expulsion:
- The player sent off (shown a red card) is out for the rest of the game and is not even permitted to sit on the bench. They must leave the courts where the game is being held.
- The team of the player sent off can substitute for that player after two minutes of playing time or after the opposing team scores, whichever comes first.
- The two-minute punishment will be controlled by the official.
- The substitute cannot come on until the ball is out of play and he has a referee’s consent.
- Free Kicks
- Types: Direct free kicks
- Wall: At least 5 feet away until the ball is in play
- Ball in Play: After it has traveled the distance of its own circumference
- Time Limit: Kick must be taken within five seconds
- Restriction: Kicker cannot touch the ball again until it has been touched by another player
- Penalty Kick
- Penalty kicks be taken from the penalty mark on the mid-point of the arc.
- All players must be out of the penalty area, and the players of the opposing team must be at least five feet from the penalty spot.
- The kicker shall not play the ball a second time until it has been touched by another player.
- Kick in
- To be taken in place of the throw in, if a ball is kicked out on one of the touchlines.
- The ball is placed on the touchline or 10 inches behind the line before kicking; the ball must be stationary.
- The kicker’s foot not kicking the ball must be outside or at least on the touchline; if it crosses the touchline, into the pitch, the kick in is given to the opposing team.
- The kick in must be taken within five seconds, if it is not taken, the kick in is given to the opposing team.
- The kicker cannot play the ball a second time until it has been played by another player; infringement of this rule results in a direct free kick to the opposing team from the point of infringement.
- Players on the opposing team must be at least five feet away from the point of the kick in.
- You CANNOT score directly from a kick in.
- Goal Clearance
- To be taken in place of a goal kick.
- If the ball crosses the goal line outside of the posts and crossbar then any player on the team awarded the kick follows the rules of a kick in.
- You CAN score directly from a ‘Goal Clearance’.
- Corner Kick
- A ball placed on the corner of the pitch. If the ball is misplaced or is moving during the kick, a goal clearance goes to the opposing team.
- Must be taken within five seconds; failure to do so entails a goal clearance to the opposing team.
- The kicker cannot play the ball a second time until it has been played by another player; infringement of this rule results in a direct free kick to the opposing team from the point of infringement.
- Players on the opposing team must be at least five feet away from the point of the corner kick.
- A goal MAY be scored directly from a corner kick.
- Penalty Kick Shootout
- The main referee decides the goal to be used.
- ‘Rock, paper, scissors’ will be used to decide the kicking order.
- If you win you decide to kick first or second.
- Three kicks will be taken by three different players.
- The captain of each team announces these three players to the main referee before the kicks are taken.
- If two teams are still tied after three kicks, additional kicks will be taken on a sudden death basis by the rest of the players who have not kicked yet.
- Players sent off during the match are not eligible to take these
- Any eligible player may change places with his goalkeeper.
- While the penalty shootout is in progress, players will remain on the opposite half of the pitch, the second referee shall control this area.
