2024-29 ASI Strategic Plan: Year Three Achievements & Next Steps

As ASI continues advancing its 2024-29 Strategic Plan, we are proud of the meaningful progress made across the organization. This work has strengthened the systems, services, and experiences that support Cal Poly students while also preparing ASI for a period of significant change and opportunity.

Throughout the past year, cross-functional teams made progress on initiatives improving the student experience, setting staff up for success, growing the organization, and strengthening ASI’s brand.

Highlights from Year 3 of the ASI Strategic Plan

  • Advancing ASI’s transition to the semester system, with program areas across the organization completing implementation milestones ahead of Fall 2026.
  • Integrating Cal Poly Maritime Academy (CPMA) into ASI operations through key milestones such as the Associated Students of the California Maritime Academy dissolution plan, ASI Bylaws updates, CPMA elections, facilities and staffing planning, and the 2026-27 ASI and University Union budgets.
  • Completing a standardized ASI user-fee review process, including a new calculation tool that will support consistent, thoughtful pricing decisions.
  • Establishing a five-year facilities project forecast and deferred maintenance plan to guide responsible care of ASI-managed spaces.
  • Strengthening ASI’s sustainability efforts through a purchasing standards checklist, ongoing communications, and the grand opening of the University Union Solar Array.
  • Improving the employee experience through new recruitment standards, a dedicated onboarding site and procedures, supervisor training, and intentionally updating position descriptions.
  • Building ASI’s visibility through a refreshed brand strategy, expanded staff brand resources, and a more than 15% increase in social media engagement.
  • Advancing safety and risk management practices, including updates to key source documents and the development of new training modules.

ASI’s Strategic Approach for 2026-27

As ASI prepares for the next phase of the plan, we are taking a more focused approach. An analysis of organizational capacity combined with a clearer vision for high-level strategic work led ASI to identify a smaller set of priorities with broad, lasting impact.

Rather than centering work primarily on tactical initiatives, ASI will focus on five organization-wide priorities:

  1. Prepare ASI for a Year-Round Academic Model: Complete a readiness assessment that identifies the organizational impacts, resource needs, and planning considerations necessary to support students throughout the year.
  2. Complete ASI’s Comprehensive Compensation Review: Develop a compensation framework that supports equitable, competitive, and fiscally responsible decisions.
  3. Increase Student Awareness, Understanding and Engagement with ASI: Implement a more coordinated and strategic approach to communicating ASI’s value to students experiencing programs, services, and managed spaces.
  4. Advance ASI Operations at Cal Poly Maritime Academy: Strengthen the systems, staffing, and financial planning needed to provide consistent, high-quality programs and services at Cal Poly Maritime Academy.
  5. Align ASI-Managed Spaces with Evolving Student Needs: Conduct a comprehensive, data-informed evaluation of ASI-managed spaces to guide future facility decisions and capital investments.

These priorities are guided by building organizational readiness, working as one ASI, and elevating the student experience. Together, these initiatives will help ASI make intentional decisions, invest resources where they create the greatest value, and continue adapting to the needs of students and the campus community.
