ASI President
2025–26 Candidates
Marc Cabeliza | College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Pronoun: he/him
Major: Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Candidate Statement
I’m Marc Cabeliza, a third-year Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering major and Chair of the University Union Advisory Board (UUAB). This year, I helped install new pickleball courts, pilot free menstrual products in the UU, and added new gym equipment. I’ve made it my mission to ensure ASI facilities and programs meet the diverse needs of every student.
As Chair of the Recruitment and Elections Committee for the ASI Board of Directors, I boosted voter turnout from 6.7% to 20% for ASI elections, launched a free headshot program, and consistently advocated for students. I’ve worked tirelessly to enhance student life, including increasing ASI club funding by $10,000 in 2024.
As your President, I will work with transportation services for more affordable commuter parking options and bus routes to grocery stores, increase campus-wide events, including concerts, and funding for all clubs. I understand that feeling supported goes beyond events and recreation. That’s why I’ll fight for more club spaces and expanded mental health resources because every student deserves access to the support they need to thrive.
I’ll work with the City of SLO to provide better renter protections for our students and ensure affordable off-campus housing. I recognize the many changes happening on campus, and I will be a President who represents students today while shaping a stronger Cal Poly for tomorrow.
Join our campaign @marc4asi for an engaging campus life with resources for every student. Make your Marc! Vote Marc Cabeliza for ASI President on April 22.
Reagan Denny | College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Major: Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Candidate Statement
Hey Mustangs! I’m honored to be running to serve you as ASI President.
Why me?
As a Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering student with a Law minor, I have taken classes in nearly every college. Across campus, I hear the same thing—students feel disconnected from choices being made about their education and campus experience. That needs to change.
For two years, I’ve worked to bridge the gap between students and decision-makers, but there’s still more to do.
What I’ve Done
As an ASI CAFES representative and Chair of External Affairs, I helped register more voters than any other college in California and pushed for stronger student representation in local government. Now, as Chair of the ASI Board of Directors—one of ASI’s three corporate officers—I oversee ASI’s $20 million budget and work to increase transparency between ASI and stakeholders. I led efforts to reform club funding policies, wrote protections for Dreamer and Indigenous student scholarships, and meet monthly with President Armstrong to advocate for student needs.
Through every meeting, vote, and initiative, one thing has remained the same: putting YOU first.
My Goals
If elected, I’ll make sure student voices aren’t just heard—they’re valued. I’ll fight for student rights, like parking and class availability, push for more transparent relationships with campus leadership and the City of SLO, and voice the need for greater funding towards student resources, like clubs and study spaces. Every step of the way, I’ll advocate for and with you.
Let’s leave Cal Poly better than we found it—together.

ASI Board of Directors
2025–26 Candidates
Bella Santos | Bailey College of Science and Mathematics
Pronoun: she/her/hers
Major: Public Health | College: Bailey College of Science and Mathematics
Candidate Statement
Hello! My name is Bella Santos, I’m a second-year studying Public Health minoring in Ethics, Public Policy, Science, and Technology (EPPST) from San Diego, California. Last year, I served as IHC president for the SoNoMo community council, and this year, I have the privilege of being an RA for first-year students. I am also involved with ASI executive staff, a volunteer of PULSE (student-led health education program), a Cal Poly Rose Float team member, and I hold a leadership position on our Pilipino Cultural club on campus, PCE. In my free time, I enjoy reading, film photography, and thrifting.
I have always been passionate about student opinion and want to foster positive change for our campus. My goal, if elected, is to work on initiatives in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice. In addition to that, I am very interested in student safety, health education (wooo public health!), and mental health. If elected, I plan to prioritize issues in these areas and be a voice for student opinion.
The reason why I am running for the Board of Directors is because of you. I want to represent your opinions, and being in this role is about what I can do for the Cal Poly community.
It is an honor to be a candidate for the ASI Board of Directors and to potentially represent the student body. I believe my diverse experiences can serve for better change on campus and effectively contribute to a more inclusive, student-focused environment.
Thank you!
Evelyn Jaminet | Bailey College of Science and Mathematics
Pronoun: she/her
Major: Biochemistry | College: Bailey College of Science and Mathematics
Candidate Statement
Hello! My name is Evelyn Jaminet, and I am excited to be running for re-election for the ASI Board of Directors. Over the past year, I’ve worked hard to amplify student voices, push for meaningful change, and ensure that students are prioritized at every level of decision-making.
One of my top priorities on the ASI Board of Directors is to highlight student concerns. As both a member of the Board of Directors and a representative on the University Union Advisory Board, I’ve had a unique position to make a direct impact through both policy and facility perspectives.
Far too often, students are unaware of the resources available to them—or worse, they can’t access them when they need them most. That’s why I’ve focused on tackling tangible issues: increasing the number of outlets in study spaces, improving awareness and availability of menstrual products, and advocating for extended Health Center hours to ensure that healthcare is accessible when students need it most.
If re-elected, I am committed to building on this important work. I will continue strengthening student representation by engaging with peers, asking tough questions to those in charge, and addressing the disconnect between students and administration. Whether it’s ensuring equitable access to resources or improving campus facilities, I firmly believe that everyone’s voice is valuable.
Let’s build on this progress. Let’s push for more transparency, improved resources, and a campus where everyone feels heard. I’m ready to continue the work—and I’d be honored to have your vote.

Candidate Statement
Hello, Mustangs!
My name is Joe Fewel, and I am excited to run for re-election as your Bailey College of Science and Mathematics Director on the ASI Board of Directors. In my second year as a member of the Board, I have worked hard to advocate for students, ensuring that your voices shape the decisions impacting our campus in the present and into the future at Cal Poly.
As a third-year double major in Biology and Political Science, I have a strong background in leadership and student advocacy. Alongside my role as BCSM Director, I serve on the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Committee, the Academic Senate Research, Scholarship & Creative Activities Committee, and previously the University Union Advisory Board. Originally from Tacoma, Washington, I am excited to represent our diverse and vibrant student body. As a freshman who will graduate in 2028, I bring a fresh perspective and a strong commitment to enhancing everyone’s campus experience. I am passionate about creating a more inclusive and supportive environment at Calpoly. I plan to focus on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that every student feels valued and heard. Luke Hofstetter | Bailey College of Science and Mathematics
Pronoun: he/him
Major: Biological Sciences | College: Bailey College of Science and Mathematics
Candidate Statement
Hello, my name is Luke Hofstetter and I am running for Board of Directors to represent the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics. I am a recent transfer student from Foothill College and I couldn’t be prouder to attend Cal Poly! Coming from an extremely supportive campus environment, I understand how important resources are to support students in their academic achievement.
Through my tenure on the Board of Directors, I want to work closely with Campus Health and Wellbeing to increase both the access to Counseling & Psychological Services and the available space for the Food Pantry. Both of these services are vital to campus life, but have been sequestered behind several barriers, making it harder for all students to access. Instead we can open up access by providing an online portal for mental health appointments and stocking additional satellite shelves throughout campus.
Additionally, I want to champion a consolidated tab for research opportunities within MustangJobs for both faculty and outside institutions to post internships or jobs for research assistants. As a Biological Sciences major, I understand how challenging finding these opportunities can be.
I have spent a lot of time and energy working towards the goal of attending Cal Poly and I want to ensure that every student can enjoy access to all that Cal Poly has to offer.

Major: Agricultural Communication | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Candidate Statement
Hello! My name is Joe Aguiar and I’m a third-year Agricultural Communication student with minors in Water Policy and Agribusiness. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to serve CAFES as an Ambassador, interacting with prospective students and their families, hosting meetings and activities for the student body, and meeting with key stakeholders in California agriculture. Now, I’m ready to take the next step in my leadership journey and represent the student body at the university level. I want to advocate and fight for YOU as a potential member serving on Board of Directors! I want to focus on bridging the gap between students and upper administration through effectively communicating the decisions being made by the university. I also want to protect the valuable animal and crop units we have that allow students to get that “Learn by Doing” experience, as well as be receptive and help with other issues that students from other colleges may be facing. Morgan Oliveira | College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Major: Agriculture Communication | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Candidate Statement
Hi Mustangs!
I’m Morgan Oliveira, a second-year Agriculture Communications student here at Cal Poly, running for re-election to the 2025-2026 ASI Board of Directors.
Cal Poly has always felt like home to me, not just because of its hands-on learning, but because of the strong sense of community that’s present within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. Growing up in my hometown of Hilmar, California as a third-generation dairy farmer, I’ve learned the values of hard work, dedication, and advocating for the industries and people who matter most. Those same values have shaped my time here at Cal Poly—whether it’s serving as an officer for the Dairy Club and CAFES Council, representing my sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, or working to bridge the gap between students and our community as Chair of the ASI External Affairs Committee.
Through each of my experiences, I’ve learned the importance of giving ourselves grace— grace to grow, learn, and support each other along the way. This past year sitting on the ASI Board of Directors, whether through civic engagement and policy efforts or leadership initiatives, I’ve worked to create meaningful connections and ensure that everyone has a voice in the decisions that impact us.
But leadership isn’t just about action—it’s also about understanding. In the hats that I’ve worn, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to lead with both passion and grace, and how to provide that for others.
Let’s keep moving forward— and give ourselves grace along the way.
Olivia Short | College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Pronoun: she/her/hers
Major: Environmental Management and Protection | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Candidate Statement
Hi everyone! My name is Olivia Short, I’m a second-year Environmental Management and Protection major, and I’m excited to be re-running for the ASI Board of Directors as a CAFES representative.
Serving as a student representative for the past academic year has been a role which I have wholeheartedly enjoyed and one that has been extremely rewarding. This experience has motivated me to pursue the position again and continue advocating for Cal Poly students. During the last two quarters, I have served on the Board of Directors Internal Review Committee, the Academic Senate Sustainability Committee, and have also been the Volunteer Coordinator for the Environmental Sciences Club. This year I have focused on advocating for improved alternative transportation through co-authoring potential legislation as well as increasing equitability for students. I’ve pursued my goal of equitability by advocating for endeavors to support students with undocumented supporters and actions in solidarity with students who are transgender or gender non-conforming. If re-elected I hope to continue these goals, especially as we enter into the integration with Cal Maritime and transitioning to semesters. As a student representative, I will ensure that student voices remain at the forefront of ASI decisions and campus adjustments as we go through these unprecedented transitions.
I am passionate about making Cal Poly inclusive to all students with special emphasis to those in CAFES, clubs, and multicultural organizations. I would love to continue my work with student government by advocating for your needs and being your ASI representative!
Bishop-Amer Davis | College of Architecture and Environmental Design
Pronoun: he/him
Major: Architectural Engineering | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences
Candidate Statement
Running for ASI Board of Directors is about much more than just a fancy title. Being the change I want to see, and the voice of my fellow students is what inspires me to serve on the Board of Directors. Often, I do not see people like me represented in leadership positions. I believe that true representation matters and being a voice for everyone motivates me to pursue every opportunity available. Aside from my ambitions, I am a first-year Architectural Engineering major from Sacramento, CA. Though my time at Cal Poly has been short, I have already dedicated 20+ hours of community service within the local community and on campus. In addition to that I am proud member of the National Society of Black Engineers (N.S.B.E), the Black Student Union (B.S.U), serve as Vice President of Communications for Sigma Phi Epsilon, and an Executive Staffer in A.S.I. These experiences shape who I am and give me the confidence to create meaningful change at Cal Poly.

No empty promises, no gimmicks—just real results for all of us. That is my guarantee if I am re-elected to the ASI Board of Directors. I am currently a second year ARCE on the Board of Directors and have already put change on paper. This year I co-authored a resolution to improve campus lighting and safety measures while specifically highlighting the importance to YOU, members of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Stone Ramage | College of Architecture and Environmental Design
Pronoun: he/him/his
Major: Architectural Engineering | College: College of Architecture and Environmental Design
Candidate Statement
Hi, I am Stone Ramage, a first-year Architectural Engineering major. My first quarters at Cal Poly have proven how amazing it is that we call San Luis Obispo our home away from home. At first glance, Cal Poly is perfect. However, throughout your time here, I know you have found something that drives you insane. After spending late nights in studio, I discovered that Subway is the only food option after 11 pm. For those without cars, you know getting around town can be an adventure. You might have other concerns but are not sure where to express them. This is why I want to represent you on the ASI Board of Directors – to turn your complaints into positive changes for all Cal Poly students.
At Cal Poly, I am involved in ARCE’s Structural Forum Committee and Cal Poly Rose Float. These experiences have shown me how small changes can significantly impact a project’s outcome, similar to the power of one voice on a student body’s experience. Throughout high school, my role in student government connected me with peers and administration to address problems such as facility cleanliness and a lack of parking. I didn’t expect to tackle these issues, but I quickly learned that improving our school meant listening to various concerns and prioritizing those with the most impact. Now, I want to use those skills to advocate for beneficial changes that can make our Cal Poly experience even more perfect. Thank you!
Ava Marino | College of Engineering

Hi everyone! My name is Ava Marino and I am a Third-Year Biomedical Engineering Student running for ASI’s Board of Directors. I am a part of EMPOWER and do Public Health research here at Cal Poly! In my free time, I love to teach martial arts, craft and hike with my dog.
For the past two years, I have had the privilege of representing the College of Engineering on ASI’s Board of Directors. Through this role, I have served on the External Affairs, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice, and Internal Review committees. I have worked to connect students with local government leaders, create diverse spaces on campus and monitor the internal processes of ASI. These opportunities have allowed me not only to grow into my role as an advocate and leader, but to foster an environment of progress and prosperity for each student on our campus.
As your CENG representative, I will be the voice of positive change in our community. Being a fellow student, I recognize how easy it is to feel isolated in a group of 20,000 individuals. I am dedicated to representing you, but more importantly amplifying your voice in every space. I will advocate for your concerns including resource availability, mental health, equity, inclusion, and academic policy. I will work actively in support of these endeavors to ensure every student feels their college experience is one to remember. Together, we can build a more connected and empowered Cal Poly community. Elias Romero | College of Engineering
Pronoun: he/him/his
Major: Mechanical Engineering | College: College of Engineering
Candidate Statement
Hello! My name is Elias Romero, and I am a third-year Mechanical Engineering Major minoring in Computer Science, born and raised in New York, NY. I’m eager to be running again for the ASI board of directors as a CENG representative and serve our amazing Cal Poly community by addressing the needs of our student body.
Throughout my time at Cal Poly, I have been involved in many extracurricular activities, most notably being a current CENG representative on the Board as well as President of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. I’ve also been a part of organizations like EMPOWER, of which I contributed to one of last year’s Formal Design Projects, as well as VP of Scholarship on the Interfraternity Council Executive Board. I’m passionate about making positive change in my community and believe my past and current leadership roles make me the best candidate for this position.
If elected again, I would love to continue to advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts within our community. Being a Latino student myself, I understand the difficulties of being a minority in university, especially within a STEM field. Being on the DEIJ committee within Student Government this year has given me great insight on how to form a more supportive space for students of all backgrounds and identities. I’m also excited about the opportunity to serve as a bridge between fraternity life and ASI, and strive to create stronger connections between these two aspects of our university through collaborative initiatives and meaningful dialogue.
Jacob Phillip Larson | College of Engineering
Major: Electrical Engineering| College: College of Engineering
Candidate Statement
As an engineering transfer student pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, I understand the importance of adaptability, hard work, and tenacity—qualities that define my journey. Growing up on the Central Coast as the youngest of ten homeschooled siblings, I worked in my family’s beekeeping business, where I learned consistency, perseverance, and hands-on problem-solving. At Allan Hancock College, I competed as a student-athlete in swimming and tutored mathematics while earning my A.A. in Engineering. I am the fourth in my family to transfer from AHC to Cal Poly (Class of 2026) and the third to pursue a STEM degree here. Last summer, I interned at Vandenberg Space Force Base, one of our nation’s leading spaceports.
I will work to ensure transparency and communication between CENG students, faculty, and administration, so your concerns are heard.
As one of five ASI representatives for the College of Engineering (CENG) I will unapologetically champion our students’ voices—regardless of race, sex, or creed.
I will advocate for:
- Paid student tutors in major-specific courses – Creating on-campus jobs while directly improving student outcomes.
- Improved visibility regarding senior status and senior project requirements – Reducing confusion for upper-division students regarding expectations/requirements.
- A clearer, more streamlined transfer student onboarding process—perhaps a packet – Ensuring transfers receive the guidance they need.
- A student-ranked list of major-specific courses by difficulty – Helping students prepare for challenging classes and minimize “class-shock.”
I will fight for the academic and professional success of every CENG student. I’d be honored to earn your vote!
Luis Chavez | College of Engineering
Pronoun: he/him
Major: Civil Engineering | College: College of Engineering
Candidate Statement
My name is Luis Chavez, a first-year Civil Engineering student who enjoys creative writing, sandbox games, and sports. These activities allow me to express myself in limitless ways, involving both exploration and risk-taking. Similarly, being part of an effective team requires one to explore ideas and be willing to share them even if they may seem improbable at first. In my first year as Executive Staff, ASI has allowed me to work in teams and discuss ideas with Cal Poly’s various heads of facilities and the rest of the student body. If I am elected to the Board of Directors, I wish to expand on these interests directly. I hope to directly hear and express the opinions here on campus about ASI’s various buildings, such as the Recreational Center, the University Union, or the reopening of the Kennedy Library. There are no bad ideas, only those that need someone to listen and act upon them. I am committed to making sure every voice is heard and that we create a campus environment that meets the diverse needs of all students no matter how improbable the proposals may seem at first.

Nimisha Thakur | College of Engineering
Pronoun: she/her
Major: Software Engineering | College: College of Engineering
Candidate Statement
Cal Poly, we are on the verge of undergoing significant changes, ranging from new buildings and resources to the Cal Maritime merger and the transition from quarters to semesters. These upcoming decisions have a profound impact on us all and are part of the reason I was inspired to run for Board of Directors.
My name is Nimisha Thakur, and I am a first-year Software Engineering student. Coming to SLO from Seattle, I was welcomed onto this campus with open arms and quickly took advantage of the many opportunities available to me. I immersed myself in organizations such as The Society of Women Engineers, Women in Software and Hardware, and became a member of ASI Executive Staff.
Being a part of Executive Staff has allowed me to support causes I am passionate about such as volunteering and helping with voter registration – which helped lead to Cal Poly’s victory in the Cal State Voters Competition. Additionally, my involvement in various engineering clubs has allowed me to meet with peers in my college and gain insight into their experiences on campus as CENG students.
As a member of the Board and a woman of color, I would be committed to promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion throughout ASI, as well as students we collect feedback and ideas from. Vote for Nimisha Thakur to engineer a better future together.
Sam Mortezagholi | College of Engineering
Major: Civil Engineering | College: College of Engineering
Candidate Statement
As a dedicated advocate for student voices and campus improvement, I am excited to run for the ASI Board of Directors. My experience in student government, municipal affairs, and community service has shaped my commitment to making Cal Poly a place where all students feel heard, supported, and empowered.
Currently, I work with San Luis Obispo Mayor Erica Stewart, where I attend policy meetings, help draft memoranda, and manage public communications to keep residents informed about key legislative changes. Long story short, I run her social media presence. This experience has given me firsthand insight into policy-making, community engagement, and the importance of transparent leadership.
At Cal Poly, I serve on the ASI Executive Staff, where I work with student leaders and university administrators to advance policies that directly impact students. I have helped organize campus-wide initiatives, set up polling booths to increase student engagement, and ensure that student concerns are addressed at the highest levels of leadership.
Beyond governance, I am deeply committed to public service and equity. Volunteering at the local homeless shelter has given me insight into the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, reinforcing my belief that leadership should be about action, not just discussion.
If elected, I will work to amplify student voices, advocate for policies that improve student life, and ensure that ASI remains an accessible and effective resource for all Mustangs. I would be honored to serve as your representative.
Taran Singh | College of Engineering
Major: Computer Science | College: College of Engineering
Candidate Statement
I don’t think the connection between students and ASI is as strong as it should be. I can say that confidently because, until recently, I didn’t even know what this role did. I knew ASI put on events and funded things around campus, but I never really stopped to think: where does all the money we pay even go?
We all have a million things to juggle – classes, jobs, trying to find time to just breathe. It’s easy to miss what ASI is doing behind the scenes, and even if you do have an opinion, who do you even tell? That’s the gap I want to close.
Imagine getting a simple email every week breaking down exactly what ASI did with your money – how much was spent, what it went to, and a chance to say if you thought it was worth it. Loved the artificial snow at the UU? Cool, we’ll do more. Think that money should’ve gone somewhere else? Let’s talk about it. Your money, your voice.
I don’t want to just sit in meetings – I want to build a system where giving feedback is as easy as sending a text. Where you don’t have to hunt for information because it comes straight to you. ASI should work for us, not the other way around.
If elected, that’s what I’ll work on: clarity, transparency, and making sure students actually feel heard. Let’s make that happen.

My name is Alyson Engel, and I’m a third-year Political Science major and blended Master’s in Public Policy student minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. Outside of school, I love rock climbing, cooking, and enjoying the beautiful SLO area.
I have represented the College of Liberal Arts on the Board of Directors for the past two years and served as Vice Chair for the past year. Additionally, I chair the ASI Business and Finance Committee, overseeing the allocation of our $20 million budget – your student fees. Candidate Statement
Hi! My name is Donya Ahmady and I am a first year Graphic Communications major from Los Angeles.. As a first year student, I have been able to see all the incredible opportunities we have available. However, I have often found myself unaware of important events, resources and decisions that directly impact my experience at Cal Poly. I want to help bridge this gap between the student body and student government by improving transparency because I believe that no student should feel lost or out of the loop. At Cal Poly, I have involved myself in organizations like UX Fest and Iter8 to foster my love for design. In that process I built many connections with peers in my college and gained insights on the challenges students in our college face. As a CLA student in a STEM focused school, I recognize the importance of our representation. I am passionate about ensuring that all voices are heard and that CLA students are supported with the same recognition and opportunities as those in other colleges. I want to ensure that every student at Cal Poly feels supported and connected to each other and the school as a whole. Hudson Kammerer | College of Liberal Arts
Pronoun: he/him
Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Fellow students of the College of Liberal Arts, my name is Hudson Kammerer and I am running to become your transformative and honest Board of Directors representative. I am a second-year Political Science major, and I know I am qualified to take on this position. As the team captain of my high school swim team, a preschool assistant teacher, and a member of the Cal Poly Student Government’s Executive Staff, I have developed critical skills in leadership, clear communication, and empathy. These positions have shared with me the value of collaborative teamwork and inclusive environments that ensure everyone has a platform for contribution.
My dedication to advocacy, inclusion, and intellectual growth will guide my commitment to representing all CLA students. Coming to California as an out-of-state student from Boulder, CO, and having few connections, I was anxious about finding a sense of belonging at Cal Poly. Despite this, the College of Liberal Arts prevailed in providing me with a community I can rely on for friendship, support, and mentorship. I have grown to love the College of Liberal Arts, and the experiences and relationships I have built here have been extraordinarily meaningful. I want to give back to the students of this college by being a leader who listens first and then acts to amplify all CLA voices.
Jackson Martinez | College of Liberal Arts
Pronoun: he/him
Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Hey everyone!
I’m Jackson Martinez, a first-year Political Science major from Sacramento, and I’m excited to run for the ASI Board of Directors!
In high school, I served as Captain of the Varsity soccer and track teams, gaining valuable leadership experience. Beyond athletics, I’m deeply passionate about civic engagement, working with organizations like SEIU, Stonewall, and community colleges to improve my community.
Since coming to Cal Poly, I’ve had the opportunity to join the ASI Executive Staff, working closely with ASI to better understand its role and impact. Through this experience, I’ve also seen areas where our campus can improve—whether it’s expanding dining hours and menu options, improving bus routes, or bringing more art to campus and dorms. Additionally as a student I’ve realized how it can be difficult to access resources when you need them. Too often, students struggle to find the support they’re looking for, and I believe ensuring accessibility and transparency on campus should be a top priority.
As a representative of the College of Liberal Arts, I would be honored to advocate for our interests, amplify our voices, and ensure CLA students feel heard and valued. If elected, I will work tirelessly to implement meaningful, equitable changes that improve student life. My goal is to foster a campus community built on transparency, connection, and accessibility, where every student has the support they need to thrive.
I hope to earn your vote and the opportunity to serve as a dedicated member of the ASI Board of Directors.
Kate McMurrey | College of Liberal Arts
Pronoun: she/her/hers
Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Hi, my name is Kate McMurrey! I’m a third-year Political Science major with a Pre-Law concentration and Sales minor, and I would love the opportunity to represent my college and the broader campus community by advocating for stronger career resources and postgraduate support.
Through my time at Cal Poly, I’ve worked to uplift different groups of people. I’ve served in multiple leadership roles, from Creative Director of The Honeyboys to now serving as Panhellenic President. I have the experience to advocate for student voices, bring people together, and create meaningful change. My mission is to push for better career services—more LSAT and GRE prep resources, stronger advising for postgraduate opportunities, and increased access to networking and mentorship programs. Cal Poly lacks career fairs and essential support for students entering long-term professions, especially in CLA, and I want to change that.
Beyond campus leadership, you can see me working at Cal Fresh Market! This reinforces my love for my college town and shows that I understand the balance between academics, work, and extracurriculars. I want to be someone you can rely on and will ensure that ASI prioritizes policies that support students in not only their college experience, but past graduation.
Cal Poly is a place of growth, opportunity, and community, but it should also be a launchpad for our futures. Every student, no matter their major, deserves access to the resources they need to succeed beyond graduation. If you want to see real investment in career development, vote Kate!
Kayla Cavazos | College of Liberal Arts
Pronoun: she/hers
Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Hi! My name is Kayla Cavazos I am a 2nd year Political Science Major concentrating in Pre-Law and minoring in Ethnic Studies from Sacramento, California. Outside of my current involvement with ASI, I am a part of Alpha Chi Omega here at Cal Poly and I am a Poly Rep. I truly love Cal Poly and everything it has offered me thus far!
I am running for re-election to the Board of Directors as a CLA Representative because of my goals to positively influence the college experience Cal Poly offers their students. More specifically I hope to continue updating the club funding process to make funds more available since the majority of our student body is involved with clubs on campus. During my time on Board, it has been clear that club funding has been greatly affected by Covid and its aftermath. I plan to continue to encourage clubs to apply for funding and make sure they receive it as well as find creative ways to use it to engage with their members as well as the greater Cal Poly community.
If elected my utmost goal would be to further diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts on campus. As a Hispanic student, I understand the challenges of being a minority in the realm of higher education and will strive to make ASI, in addition to our campus as a whole, a more welcoming space for students of all intersectional backgrounds.
Kyle Evans | College of Liberal Arts
Pronoun: he/him
Major: Communication Studies | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Hello Cal Poly, I am Kyle Evans from Sacramento, CA, and I am a first-year Communication Studies major who aims to amplify the perspectives and voices of College of Liberal Arts Students to those most capable of change.
Immediately following the start of this academic year, I burrowed myself into various aspects of Cal Poly culture: I work at Hearth in Vista Grande, I am a brother of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and I am deeply invested in The Surfrider Foundation, to enumerate a few involvements. Also, I am in the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law fraternity, the Communication Studies Club, and additional academic-focused organizations. Each activity provides depth to my multifaceted liberal arts education, a depth that will define my influence as a representative of the CLA. Foremost, I aim to be a sustainability-minded delegate because of my philanthropic connections to our local environment.
Through my involvement in the ASI Executive Staff, I learned the processes for advancing student initiatives, and as a pre-law student, I aim to leverage my policy analysis skills with a unique fervor for community service to provide CLA students with a footing for the future. The next step of the CLA may be the most pivotal as our faculties address the quarter-semester change, full-time operations, and budget cuts, and I believe that I can be the most effective delegate for CLA constituents as I ensure the transparency of ASI operations and act for the better interests of College of Liberal Arts students.
Olivia Cooke | College of Liberal Arts
Pronoun: she/her/hers
Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Hi! My name is Olivia Cooke, and I’m a first-year Political Science major here at Cal Poly. I’m from San Bernardino, California, but Cal Poly has quickly become my second home. Outside of class, I’m involved with the ASI executive staff, Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity, and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. You might also catch me on the intramural soccer field or grabbing a bite at Gbrothers Taqueria.
No institution is perfect; there is always room for growth. Since coming to Cal Poly, I’ve seen areas where the College of Liberal Arts has the potential to improve, but what stands out to me most is the mindset of many students within the CLA community.
Many students I’ve spoken to have expressed doubt about their success in their programs, which is an understandable feeling at a STEM-focused school. But every student, no matter their major, should feel confident in their ability to suceeed. My goal as a representative for CLA is to create an environment where students in the humanities feel supported and empowered, knowing they have equal resources to achieve whatever they set their mind to.
If elected to the Board of Directors, I will work to build initiatives that build self-confidence and security, promote events that connect students with mentorship and opportunities, and strengthen a collaborative, inclusive community. I want every student to have as many opportunities as possible to help them climb the ladder of success while doing what they love, no matter their background or major.
Scott Drouin | College of Liberal Arts
Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Hi Mustangs, my name is Scott Drouin and you should vote for me for CLA Board of Directors!
TLDR: I’m the candidate that puts his money where his mouth is and will deliver on improving the student experience.
I’m a third year Political Science major with an Ethnic Studies minor from San Diego, California. I’m running for re-election to the Board after serving last year and after my time as the ASI Secretary of Accessibility on the Executive Cabinet this year. Outside of ASI, I’m an editor for Paideia, the Political Science Journal, and a part of Phi Alpha Delta here in SLO.
In my time here at ASI, I have worked to improve Cal Poly regardless of any setback. I have written more resolutions than any other member of student government and done the work you trusted me to do such as advocating for improved pathway lighting on campus. I plan to continue this work by listening to what is important to you to make the whole Cal Poly community the best it can be.
One thing I have learned this year is that ASI is integral to setting the tone of supporting student needs and resources in light of negligent and chaotic federal policies. I understand the challenges we are facing and will use my voice, position, and relationships with administration to ensure transparency, stability of student support, and the preservation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice on campus.
I’m ready to earn your vote.
Spencer Silverman | College of Liberal Arts
Major: English | College: College of Liberal Arts
Candidate Statement
Hello Mustangs! My name is Spencer Silverman, and I’m a first-year English major applying for the opportunity to represent the College of Liberal Arts on the ASI Board of Directors.
As the current IHC President of the Towers neighborhood, I’ve worked closely with students and administration to plan fun events for the community and work to build a strong, inclusive environment. Additionally, my experience on ASI Executive Staff has given me valuable insight into Cal Poly’s administrative processes—from dining, the quarter-semester changes, to broader campus policies—ultimately preparing me to advocate effectively for our college. Through these roles, I’ve gained a unique understanding of student government and the responsibilities of a Board of Directors representative.
More personally, I have been reading and writing from a young age, leading me to win a few short story competitions in my hometown. In high school, I was involved in ASB, but not as much as I would’ve liked, so I resolved to further my involvement in student government when I came to Cal Poly.
If elected, I’ll prioritize transparency, communication, and access to resources. I want to ensure that the voices of Liberal Arts students are heard, whether that means addressing academic concerns, advocating for better materials, or working to build a more connected CLA community.
Outside of academics, I’ve played soccer for over 10 years, I love R&B music, and you’ll probably find me reading in my free time. I’d be honored to represent you—vote Spencer Silverman for ASI Board of Directors!

Hey CLA! My name is Tanner Schinderle, and I am a Political Science major hoping to represent you on the Board of Directors. Student Government has always been a passion of mine because of my love for the community and a desire to serve those around me. I believe diversity is our greatest strength and having all voices heard makes our community a better place. I currently serve in the Executive Cabinet within ASI, with my role being to develop future leaders within Student Government. This positions me to continue this work next year on our Board of Directors. Going into next year, our campus will face a multitude of changes including merging with Cal State Maritime, Quarter to Semester conversion, etc. Student voice is essential more than ever in these changes and the knowledge I have gained through Student Government will allow me to represent student interests in all of these conversations.
Serving on the Board of Directors is about advocacy, support, and listening to those who elected me. In every decision, I will be focused on the needs of CLA students ensuring all voices are heard. Never hesitate to reach out with any questions and make sure no matter who you vote for, you vote!

Sophie Gunter | Orfalea College of Business
Pronoun: she/her/hers
Major: Business Administration, Accounting | College: Orfalea College of Business
Candidate Statement
Hi Mustangs! My name is Sophie Gunter, I am a second year Accounting student minoring in Law and Society and my goal is to pursue a career in legislation or defense post-grad. Over my last year at Cal Poly, I have explored leadership roles wherever I could: whether that means advocating for my peers in the classroom, being a Week of Welcome Orientation Leader for the newest class of students, or taking on the role of Assistant Vice President of Philanthropy for my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega.
Coming to college has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life and has given me so many new perspectives. I believe it is so important to hear from students of all backgrounds, which is why my number one goal is to be a voice for everyone. Creating positive change is what inspires me most about leadership, so I promise to be driven by student feedback to make your ideas a real possibility that will benefit our entire campus.
Taking on this role would give me the voice I aspire to have to be able to advocate for everyone on campus and bring Cal Poly even closer together. Thank you for your consideration and vote Sophie Gunter!
