The views and opinions expressed below are those of the candidates and do not necessarily reflect the official position of ASI.

ASI President

2024-25 Candidates

Scott Drouin - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: he/they

Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement

We’re at a watershed moment. Cal Poly is gearing up for a decade’s worth of innovation that will give students new dorms, new student success centers, semesters, and, of course, a new library. But what about us? Where are our adequate study spaces, where are our improvements for student-city relationships, and where are our campus safeguards to allow students to exist safely in their identity on campus? Students need support now.

I currently sit on the Board of Directors, serving on both the Diversity and Inclusion and External Affairs committees, and I know from first-hand experience that ASI needs to do more. I have worked on writing resolutions focused on inclusivity, and I have organized events that lift up all facets of Cal Poly’s student body. I am also Treasurer of the Political Science Club and a member of Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity, and I recognize the need to improve bureaucratic efficiency for clubs and organizations. I love Cal Poly, from the rodeo to SDAB programming; my heart is full for our campus.

I will work as president to ensure that not just your immediate needs are met but also that Cal Poly structurally adapts to meet the needs of all students in every college, particularly those who hold any intersection of systemically marginalized identities. As a queer, neurodivergent student, I know what has to be done, and I know we will work together to achieve our goals. Let’s get this done. It’s time for Students Now.

Julian (JT) Hernandez - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: He/Him

Major: Sociology | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement

I am Julian (JT) Hernandez, a third-year Sociology major from Lompoc California. I have worked on Vandenberg Space Force Base for 2 years and am currently involved with ASI. Within my experience of being at Cal Poly, I am confident in my ability to use my unique perspectives as a transfer student, fraternity founding father, government employee, commuter student, and my major within sociology to work towards making positive change on campus. My goal for 2024-2025 is to greatly increase involvement within ASI to help meet the demand needed for making changes on campus. Student voices are among the most powerful voices on campus when united together. I am not looking to be the single voice of students but rather an amplifier of the voices that go unheard on campus. I am an open-minded and resilient individual who loves to hear what my fellow students have to say about making change. It is important to say I am a big supporter of mental health and believe we can serve students better in this regard. I do not often make many promises but I would like to make one for all of you. If given the opportunity, I will continuously, vigorously, and with all my effort work towards representing the students of Cal Poly to the best of my ability.

Jordan Schleifer - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: He/Him

Major: Political Science | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement

Hi Cal Poly! I’m Jordan Schleifer, a 4th year, majoring in Political Science & Interdisciplinary Studies; actively involved in Mock Trial, Swing Dancing and various community initiatives. Additionally, I’m working over twenty hours weekly at a law firm for experience and to help make a difference in the lives of people in our community. Besides work, I cook for friends, remain a committed student, participate in several other clubs, volunteer locally & internationally, and still find time for dancing!

I believe that ALL students of Cal Poly deserve the best representation possible from someone they personally choose to do the job. I advocated for students and faculty in the State government and would be honored to continue to do so daily for our university. I’ve started compiling a list of things to be addressed on campus; please add your own ideas!: http://tinyurl.com/PolyPriorities
I want to be honest with you: I can’t promise to be able to accomplish everything on the list, but I can promise tireless, zealous work towards as many as possible.

I sincerely wish for the students to be represented by someone YOU choose, whoever that may be. If you do choose to elect me, you can be certain that I will be fighting every single day for all of you and for the improvements you deserve.

Ashleigh Spragins - Orfalea College of Business

Pronoun:

Major: Business Administration, Quantitative Analysis | College: Orfalea College of Business

Candidate Statement

Hey, Mustangs! I am honored to run as the voice of ASI.

As ASI President, I want to create a campus community that fosters a sense of belonging and connection. Creating an environment that promotes student well-being and mental health is paramount. I am committed to advocating for students, especially during the transition from quarter to semester, and addressing topics like class registration. Enhancing your college experience is my top priority.
As a member of the ASI Board of Directors, I advocate for the needs and concerns of the students. In recent discussions, I addressed student concerns with the Cal Poly Corporation, including dining hall hours and costs. My major in Business Administration and Quantitative Analysis concentration equips me with skills to make analytical and impactful decisions. During ASI Board meetings, I engage with campus officials and utilize said skills to ask critical questions and create positive changes on campus. I have successfully transformed student needs into action by drafting resolutions for dorm improvements as the VP of Outreach for on-campus living.

As the VP of Finance of my sorority, Delta Gamma, I manage a budget of $400,000. This role allows me to reflect on the chapter’s needs and take action through budgeting methods. I advocated and implemented improving student safety in the ASI Finance committee by extending Mustang Shuttle night hours. I am committed to continuing this work during my presidency.

I hear you, I am here for you, and I will advocate for you.

Evelyn Jaminet - Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Pronouns: She/her

Major: Biochemistry | College: Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Candidate Statement:

Hi! My name is Evelyn Jaminet, and I am a 2nd year Biochemistry student from Denver, Colorado. I spend a lot of time in my chemical biology research lab and volunteering at the Cal Poly Cat Program. I love skiing when I go home for winter break, playing intramural volleyball, making crafts, and trying out new recipes.
I currently represent Bailey College of Science and Math on the ASI Board of Directors and am a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee. During my time in this role, I have learned so much about the inner workings of Cal Poly’s academic environment and campus administration, and have also gained invaluable insights that have shaped my understanding of effective leadership.

I have worked hard to promote DEI on our campus. Through collaborative initiatives and meaningful dialogue, I have strived to create a campus community where every student feels valued and empowered. I hope to continue to actively engage with students, faculty, and administrators to address systemic injustices, advocate for marginalized communities, and implement policies that support DEI initiatives. Every voice deserves to be heard, every perspective valued, and every individual respected for who they are.

My dedication to DEI initiatives and current experience in student leadership positions me to serve as an effective advocate for the needs of our diverse student body. Mason Stobbe - Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Pronouns:

Major: Physics | College: Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Candidate Statement:

I will bring Chipotle to campus or resign in shame and disgrace.

Jett Palmer - Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Pronouns:

Major: Statistics | College: Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Candidate Statement:

Hi Mustangs, I’m Jett Palmer! I study statistics in the College of Science & Math. This year, I’ve had the pleasure of representing your voice on the ASI Board of Directors. My advocacy focuses on student mental health and equity. In February, I authored legislation that requests the Academic Senate to recognize mental health in the campus-wide list of excused absences. Student well-being is of utmost importance to me. After being elected last year, I was appointed as the Chair of the Internal Review and Chair of Bylaw Review for ASI. These roles have allowed me a hand in our policies, focusing on how to use your student fees responsibly and foster effective student politics. Lastly, I was recently elected as the Chair of Policy and Procedure for the COSAM Diversity and Inclusion committee. Students and faculty alike respect my diligent and passionate leadership that fights for humanitarian needs. All of my work, including nonprofit leadership, behavioral scientific research, and mental health advocacy, all center around the service of people. I would love the opportunity to serve the student body this year. Please consider voting for Jett Palmer!

Visruth Srimath Kandali – Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Pronoun:

Major: Statistics | College: Bailey College of Science and Mathematics

Candidate Statement:

Hi, my name is Visruth, I’m a first year Statistics major who has recently taken to fencing in college! Additionally, some of my other hobbies are photography, reading, & writing.

Committing to Cal Poly (almost a year ago!) was an easy decision, the stats department is fantastic and a joy to be a part of, and I gleaned that from the first time I met with them, except for one thing. The lack of diversity in Cal Poly is no secret, and is a common concern, and my family and I held the same concern. Honestly, now that I’ve taken nearly 1.5 terms at Cal Poly, I can say that this fear isn’t entirely unfounded. Living in an environment like this as a POC is not all together too inviting nor is it very comfortable, but the one thing that has allayed my concern is the clear dedication that members of the community show to counteract these fears. I truly appreciate these people, too numerous to count, but there aren’t enough of them. There will never be enough, there can be no such thing as “too much representation”, I cannot feel “too at home” at Cal Poly, and so I’d like to thank all those who work to make Cal Poly a more inclusive environment. And if you will let me, I hope to do the same. Everyone should feel welcomed at Cal Poly, and I will work to ensure that my fears are not felt by anyone else. I know how it feels.

Reagan Denny – College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun: She/her/hers

Major: Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hey! I’m Reagan Denny, a second-year BRAE major minoring in law and society, and I am running for re-election to the Board.

I’ve learned everything I know in the buddy seat of a rice harvester with my dad. In my pink John Deere hat and muddy ladybug boots, I learned the value of showing up, working hard, and doing things right. These values have formed me, and led to some amazing opportunities. As a California FFA State Officer, I had the incredible chance to be a part of a team that led nearly 100,000 students. Following that experience, I interned for two agricultural lobbying groups, where I spent my days on the steps of the state capitol, learning to effectively advocate for agriculture in a way that generates stakeholder attention.

For the past year, I’ve served on the Board as a CAFES representative and Chair of External Affairs. Our team registered more students to vote than any other college in California, and regularly attended city council meetings. We set out to build a stronger relationship with the community, and our work isn’t over. If re-elected, I would continue to ask decision-makers hard questions about respecting our agricultural roots, while evolving to meet the needs of the students of tomorrow. I would build civic engagement opportunities, and work diligently to ensure student needs are heard by local officials.

A vote for me is a vote for someone you can trust will show up, work hard, and do it right, every time.

Garret Gomes – College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun:

Major: Agricultural Communications | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hello, I’m Garret Gomes a first-year student majoring in Agricultural Communications. Growing up in a small town in California’s Central Valley I was taught at a very young age to stand up for what I believe in, and what’s best for all. I grew up learning the importance of hard work, determination, and doing what’s right even when others don’t.

Throughout my lifetime, I have been placed in multiple leadership positions that required me to make impactful decisions that played big roles in the organizations that I have served. Now at Cal Poly, I have had the opportunity to join multiple clubs and as an ASI Board of Director, I will strive to be a champion of student rights, positive change, and a voice for those who feel they are unheard.
I am ready to tackle our college’s most pressing issues, like preserving our agricultural land, and standing up for student workers while ensuring the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences is well represented. It is important to me that we all feel we belong here, because it takes all of us working together to pay tribute to and build upon Cal Poly’s tradition of success, while looking forward to forge a strong, prosperous, and diverse Cal Poly for future generations.

Together we can create a positive environment where we all belong, and where each of our voices can be heard, respected, and represented. The time is now, let’s get to work building a prosperous Cal Poly for all.

Olivia Short – College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun: She/Her/Hers

Major: Environmental Management and Protection | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hello everyone! My name is Olivia Short and I’m a first year environmental management and protection student. I’m from San Diego and in my free time I like going outside, going to museums, and reading. I enjoy hiking to the P and I am a regular at the Cal Poly Garden Club. I have been interested in student government work for the past five years, throughout high school I held elected ASB positions and continuing into college I’ve been a member of the ASI executive staff. I’ve volunteered at ASI events such as the campaign Flex Your Right, Buck the Stigma, and the Winter Club Fair and I’m aiding in two projects from ASI executive staff to plant more trees on campus and to establish community gardens. I believe that this campus has the potential and community to hear the voices of all students, regardless of background, and I plan on continuing that pursuit in my role as a representative of the students. In my past leadership positions I made a purposeful effort to include everyone’s thoughts in decision making and I want to continue that mindset. As a representative on the board I plan to advocate for more campus accessibility and to support continuous funding and resources for cultural centers and clubs. It is my goal to make Cal Poly inclusive to all students with special emphasis to those in CAFES. I would love to continue my work with student government by being a representative of you, the students!

Morgan Oliveira – College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronouns:

Major: Agriculture Communications | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hi everyone! I’m Morgan Oliveira, a first-year Agriculture Communications student. I’m from Hilmar, CA, where the population of people is easily outnumbered by the amount of dairy cows in town. Ironically enough, I’ve grown up a third-generation dairy farmer, and have since developed a passion for agriculture and its industry. Within the agriculture industry, it’s undeniable that every person involved, whether producer, consumer, or advocate, has a different story to share. Agriculture is an industry with a plethora of individuality, and that same individuality is mirrored on the Cal Poly campus. Every one of us has a unique story that isn’t easily shown. We’ve all experienced walking to class with our music on and head down, avoiding eye contact, and having a mission of where to be in the next ten minutes. But learning about others is simple, all we have to do is to “look up”. If elected a student body representative, I would encourage all of us to “look up”- and acknowledge new opportunities, experiences, and stories of others. Every club, event, or activity holds the opportunity to get involved, inside and outside of campus. As a representative, I find it crucial that we promote these experiences and foster a community of growth for everyone within our student body. In the same way that agriculture represents a diverse and determined group of people, every single student at Cal Poly carries a unique set of interests that ultimately creates the campus community that we find in San Luis Obispo.

Jake Wallace Sporleder – College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun: he/him

Major: Agricultural Systems Management | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hello, I am Jake Sporleder, an Agriculture Systems Management student from Santa Cruz CA. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors backpacking, fishing, and nature photography. I like eating and growing food and I have been lucky to travel outside the U.S. and explore diverse cultures and cuisines.

I supported DEI on campus at my high school. I was one of 3 male members of the Female Empowerment Club. Having dyslexia, I understand the challenges of learning differences.

I was a member of my high school Site Counsel and provided input on the decisions for the annual education goals and campus budget.

If I’m elected I will work to:

Improve Campus Dining options for menu diversity, quality, consistency, and affordability, with extended hours.

Expand Dorm Vending Machine products beyond snack food to include necessities like laundry soap, toothpaste, dish soap, Q-tips, Brita filters and batteries, Clorox wipes, etc.

Advocate for Affordable Housing closer to people not like Poly Canyon Village by the dairy farm with better access to the main campus and downtown.

Speak to streamlining the approval process for changing majors or completing a dual major.

I promise to listen to concerns, find common ground, build community, and respond with solutions.

Katelyn Silva – College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun:

Major:  Agribusiness | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hi, my name is Katelyn Silva, and I am a third-year Agribusiness student with a minor in Agricultural Leadership. I grew up immersed in the agricultural industry showing beef cattle, horses, and hogs, and my family also runs a small herd of about 50 cow/calf pairs. Since joining FFA, I have made being a voice for agriculture one of my top priorities. As a passionate advocate for agriculture and student empowerment, I am committed to serving our community and ensuring that the voices and needs of agriculture students are heard and addressed. Having been actively involved in the Cal Poly Bull Test, Agribusiness Management Club, Young Cattlemen’s Association, Los Lecheros Dairy Club, and Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority, I have an understanding of the challenges that students within CAFES face. The College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences is where most of Cal Poly’s Learn By Doing can be seen, and CAFES’ vast needs should be considered when making decisions on campus. If given the opportunity to serve on the ASI Board of Directors, I will do my best to be a voice for agriculture students and ensure that our college can continue to thrive.

Matthew McDonald – College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun:

Major: Food Science | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hello fellow students,

I’m Matthew McDonald, a first-year pursuing a major in food science. Although I’m new to campus, I have been actively involved in various extracurricular activities, including serving as a member of the Food Science Club and holding the position of treasurer for the Environmental Science Club. I’m eager to make an impact just like how I volunteered in the restoration project by Sweet Spring Preserves in Los Osos, where I replaced invasive plants with natives to balance the ecosystem. I will strive to be a voice for all students, particularly those in smaller majors like food science, who deserve to be dedicated and represented on the council. Furthermore, I’m deeply committed to promoting awareness for the College of Agriculture within our university community. I believe that the council should have better representation of agricultural interests. Together, let’s make positive changes for our university and environment!

Toby Van Es – College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences

Pronoun:

Major: Agribusiness | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

As a candidate for the Board of Director position, I will commit to represent the diverse voices and backgrounds within our agricultural community at Cal Poly. Representation lies at the heart of effective governance, and as your representative, I am committed to fostering an environment where every CAFES student feels heard, valued, and respected. I will work tirelessly to amplify your concerns, advocate for your rights, and champion policies that enhance the overall student experience.

Megan Dixon - College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences

Pronoun:

Major: Agricultural Business | College: College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Having grown up in the agriculture industry and now actively involved as an agribusiness student in agricultural organizations on campus like Los Lecheros Dairy Club, Western Bonanza, CAFES Ambassadors, the National Agri-Marketing Association, and the Young Cattlemen’s Association, I am deeply passionate about the crucial role agriculture plays in our society and economy.

If elected to serve as your CAFES Representative on the ASI Board of Directors, my top priorities will be:

Protecting our agricultural facilities and infrastructure on campus. Quality facilities and resources are vital to effectively training the next generation of agriculturalists, scientists, industry leaders, and business professionals.
Increasing awareness of agriculture within the campus community. Agriculture impacts all of our lives through the food we consume, the natural resources we utilize, and our shared environment. I will bridge connections and promote collaboration between agricultural students and those in other disciplines.
Ensuring a strong voice for students in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. As a member of the Board of Directors, I will be a fierce advocate, ensuring the perspectives and core needs of CAFES students are well represented and our interests protected.

With your support, I will work diligently to uphold our university’s leadership in agricultural education and research while fostering a greater understanding of agriculture’s essential roles across the broader campus community. Together, we can shape a future where agriculture’s immense value is recognized by all. I humbly ask for your vote, Megan Dixon for CAFES Representative on the ASI Board of Directors.

Colin Pickering - College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun: he/him/his

Major: Agricultural Business | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Candidate Statement:

Hello, my name is Colin Pickering and I am a second-year Agricultural Business major. Coming from Florida, I bring a new point of view and a strong dedication to improving our community. Over the last two years in SLO, I’ve seen the campus go through notable transformations, and I am excited to continue this positive change through serving on the Associated Students Inc. Board of Directors. My background in agriculture, including years of hands-on experience, has instilled the “Learn by Doing” philosophy in me along with a strong work ethic and working hard to achieve my goals. As shown by my long days of work, often 6 days a week, I am dedicated to getting the job done.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential to Cal Poly’s success and growth, and through an ASI representative position, I promise to listen to and value the voices of students. I am committed to promoting inclusive environments where all students are welcomed and supported, recognizing that a diverse student body helps to enrich our community.

Being an active member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity has taught me lessons in the importance of community, leadership, and community service. Being on the Board of Directors would allow me to use an even larger platform to help contribute to our school.

I would be honored to represent the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences on the ASI Board of Directors. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to make Cal Poly an even better school.

Allie Reiman - College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

Pronoun:

Major: Agricultural Science | College: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences

In addition, I am a CAFES General Ambassador and a member of Alpha Phi. In my free time, I enjoy snowboarding, wakesurfing, and running! Bao Quy (Jack) Nguyen - College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Pronoun: he/they

Major: Architecture | College: College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Candidate Statement:

Hi everyone! I am a first-year Architecture major from Da Nang, Vietnam. I am currently a part of the ASI Executive Staff and Vice President of Marketing for the SoNoMo Inter Housing Council. Although I have only briefly been in San Luis Obispo, I have already been involved in multiple activities and clubs that allowed me to grow my leadership skills. Therefore, I am excited to be filing and running for the ASI Board of Directors because I want to learn more about the policies and legislation behind Cal Poly itself. I want to learn how to use the funding and authority given to boards to offer help and support to the rest of the student body.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are crucial to me as a candidate for ASI Student Government and an international student. My experience working as VP of Marketing in IHC, collaborating with other VPs and the president, has allowed me to be more cautious as I plan and announce events, and I make sure to include and welcome people from different backgrounds. An example would be making an event that does not focus solely on heterosexual groups or a specific group of religions. In addition, I acknowledge that Cal Poly SLO is a PWI university, and I believe it is essential to make such a ‘title’ last intimidating and allow all students to feel supported and valued. I am committed to working towards such goals with fellow student leaders.

Clark Stafford - College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Pronoun: he/him/his

Major: Architectural Engineering | College: College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Candidate Statement:

Hi! I am Clark Stafford, an Architectural Engineering major from Arroyo Grande, CA. I am passionate about leadership and policy change, emphasizing diversity and equity through topic awareness. I currently serve as a senator on my Inter-Housing council and have 2 years of previous experience in leadership as an elected secretary in high school student government doing ASB-type activities. This year alone, I brought Narcan training to my community center and created a mental health awareness art night. I’ve been all about blending creativity with practicality, and I am determined to bring that same energy to campus life and my position on the Board of Directors. People who know me say I am most passionate about listening to people, speaking up when I want change and representing you. I plan to stay informed of everyone’s needs by visiting studios and club meetings to talk directly to the people I directly represent.

I approach all things with an open mind and plan to go above and beyond to make your voice heard, especially those who feel underrepresented in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. I plan on maintaining tight-knit relationships with as many clubs as possible that revolve around the college, especially those that emphasize DEI.

If you want somebody who will speak up for your needs and is determined to get things done, I am the right person to elect. My name is Clark Stafford; remember to Put the Mark Next to Clark!

Aaron Posternack - College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Pronoun: He/him

Major: City and Regional Planning | College: College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Candidate Statement:

Hey everyone, I am a third-year City and Regional Planning major and have been serving on the Board of Directors since 2023. I am part of Cal Poly Urbanists, Associated Students in Planning, and the Institute of Transportation Engineers Clubs. My focus is improving campus transportation and student mental health.

It is no secret that transportation is a huge issue here on campus, and there is a lot that can and should be done to solve this critical issue. Parking on campus has become more painful, bike infrastructure is still inadequate, pedestrian infrastructure still needs upgrades, and transit service should be better.

In addition, pedestrian safety is a huge concern. Students have had more than a few close calls between cars, bikes, and scooters, with a few of those close calls tragically leading to collisions. I will campaign for more and better bike infrastructure, improved campus shuttle service, and safer pedestrian infrastructure.

I will serve the student body boldly and diligently, whether it be through talking with fellow students or working with directors to pass legislation.

Share what you feel, and I will be your voice! By working together, we can have a safer, happier, and more mobile campus experience!”

Weston Patrick - College of Engineering

Pronoun:

Major: Computer Science | College: College of Engineering

Candidate Statement:

Hello! My name is Weston Patrick, I’m a first-year Computer Science major from Colorado and I’m running to be one of the College of Engineering representatives for the Board of Directors. I am running to help improve the Cal Poly community with two primary focuses.
Focus 1: Ensure that the student body voice is used to create positive change.

If elected, one of my roles will be to represent the official voice of engineering students. I plan to use this as a means to create positive change in the areas that matter most to students. Specifically, as an engineer, I understand how important effective academic advising and useful study spaces are to our college, so I will ensure student voices are heard to improve these areas.

Focus 2: Ensuring that ASI is a transparent organization that promotes community.

While ASI works to improve student life at Cal Poly, sometimes that work can seem unknown to the student body. For that reason, I want to ensure that the organization conducts itself as transparently as possible, ensuring that ASI is something all students can be proud of. For me, this comes in the form of increasing specific ASI efforts to strengthen community and belongingness.

Finally, as a representative of Cal Poly’s largest college, my primary focus will be listening. I commit to approaching the job with an open ear and open mind as I work towards building a better Cal Poly for every student.

I would love to be a part of the ASI Board of Directors to provide a representation and voice for women in engineering. If elected, I would love to help advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts within ASI and on campus. Being a Latino student myself, I understand the difficulties of being a minority in university especially within a STEM field and will work to make our community a more supportive space for students of all backgrounds and identities. Building on the success of establishing an Esports Lab, I plan to increase on-campus events and community engagement. Whether this means smaller gatherings or larger tournaments, we have a massive population in this sphere that has yet to be fully explored. Finally, I want to provide more campus support to Fraternity and Sorority life. To be honest, I never thought I would join a fraternity when coming to college. However, it has proven to be an integral part of my experience, and I would love to help gain more support to foster a positive experience for members of the fraternities and sororities that reside here. Thanks for your support, and I look forward to a fantastic year ahead serving the students of Cal Poly!

Sofia Buduchina - College of Engineering

Pronoun: she/her

Major: Biomedical Engineering | College: College of Engineering

Candidate Statement:

Hey everyone! My name is Sofia Buduchina, and I’m re-running for the Board of Directors for Cal Poly ASI.

Sometimes, it’s hard to catch a break. There’s always the next assignment, the next meeting, the next thing. And when you’re busy trying to catch up on everything you want to get done, it’s hard to pay attention to the other ways in which your experience here could be better. It’s exciting that a new dining facility opened, but it’s still hard finding good study spaces with the library under construction. It’s a good feeling knowing that you accomplished the plans you had for your day, but it’s tough knowing that just maybe, you couldn’t voice larger concerns affecting your day-to-day experience at Cal Poly.

I feel that too. But now, I’ve had the privilege to serve as a CENG representative and chair of the D&I Committee on the 2023-24 Board of Directors, because of you. I’ve spent hundreds of hours learning about the ASI space, identifying points of improvement, and helping restructure processes so change doesn’t happen as slow as it does so we don’t miss out on our concerns of today.

Whether it’s continuing to push ASI initiatives despite familiar roadblocks, or continuing to organize exciting events that bring us together, I have the experience necessary to hit the ground running. I’m excited to dedicate the next hundred hours to help us do more, because this family genuinely matters to me. Let’s do more, and do good, together.

Ethan Robin - College of Engineering

Pronoun: Any

Major: Computer Engineering | College: College of Engineering

Candidate Statement:

Hello!

My name is Ethan Robin. I am a third year Computer Engineering Major and a current College of Engineering representative for the ASI Board of Directors. I’m running to take on this same position next year so I can continue advocating for engineering students like you!

As a representative, I have been, and plan to keep pushing for more transparency and accountability. It isn’t nearly clear enough why some decisions get made on this campus or how things work. Why is parking so expensive? Who makes the rules clubs have to follow? Why is enrollment/class registration so chaotic?

It’s these sort of questions that I strive to not only find answers to, but to share those answers as much as possible. I firmly believe that the more students know about what is happening on campus, the more we can give feedback and keep Cal Poly accountable.

Embedded in this mission is diversity, equity, and inclusion. Fundamentally, transparency and accountability requires that the diverse viewpoints that make up our university are included in the decisions that get made. After all, it’s impossible to be transparent if certain viewpoints are excluded from conversation!

Thank you for your support in this mission, and thank you for voting in this year’s ASI elections!
-Ethan Robin

(By the way, feel free to contact me at erobin@calpoly.edu if you have any questions, want to learn more about me or what I’m doing as a representative, need support, or just want to hang out!)

Ava Marino - College of Engineering

Pronoun: she/her

Major: Biomedical Engineering | College: College of Engineering

Candidate Statement:

Hi everyone! My name is Ava Marino and I am a second-year Biomedical Engineering student running for ASI’s Board of Directors. In my free time, I teach Martial Arts, paint, and love to hike locally.

I am from Thousand Oaks CA, but have traveled back and forth to SLO visiting family many times in the past few years. Upon visiting to SLO for the first time, I recognized the tight-knit community of individuals in the area and instantly knew I wanted to attend Cal Poly.

As a CENG representative, I will be your voice of change. Being a fellow student, I recognize how easy it is to feel unheard and unseen in a group of 20,000 others. It is my goal not only to represent you, but to advocate for concerns within our community including mental health, equity, inclusion and self-expression on Cal Poly’s campus. I will work actively with you in support of these changes to ensure every student that steps foot on this campus can be proud to call themselves a Mustang.

Alyson Engel - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: she/her/hers

Major: Political Science  | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement:

Hi! My name is Alyson Engel, and I am a second-year Political Science major from Sacramento minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. I am incredibly excited to be running for re-election to the ASI Board of Directors. Outside of ASI, I am involved with Garden Club, Hiking Club, Political Science Club, and RFC. In my free time, I enjoy crochet, cooking, paddleboarding, and spending time with the people I love.

I have represented the College of Liberal Arts on the ASI Board of Directors for the past academic year. This role has strengthened my passion for leadership, student advocacy, and social justice. As a member of the External Affairs Committee, I’ve enjoyed working to increase campus civic engagement, including registering more Cal Poly students to vote than any other college in California. I’ve hosted events that fostered discussion and connection between students and candidates for the SLO County Board of Supervisors. I’m proud to show up every day to ensure each student’s voice is heard within campus, city, state, and federal government affairs. Within our STEM-focused school, I am dedicated to representing the unique interests of every CLA student inside and outside of the boardroom.

If re-elected, I will exemplify leadership and implement change through a lens of socioeconomic diversity and equity, respect for the environment, and intersectional justice. I will work hard to cultivate a campus community of representation and respect for unique student perspectives and identities. I hope to continue to uphold ASI’s student-centered mission with your vote!

Kayla Cavazos - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: she/her

Major: Political Science  | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement:

Hi! My name is Kayla Cavazos I am a 2nd year Political Science Major concentrating in Pre-Law and minoring in Ethnic Studies from Sacramento, California. Outside of my current involvement with ASI, I am a part of Alpha Chi Omega here at Cal Poly and I am a Poly Rep. I truly love Cal Poly and everything it has offered me thus far!

I am running for re-election to the Board of Directors as a CLA Representative because of my goals to positively influence the college experience Cal Poly offers their students. More specifically I hope to continue updating the club funding process to make funds more available since the majority of our student body is involved with clubs on campus. During my time on Board, it has been clear that club funding has been greatly affected by Covid and its aftermath. I plan to continue to encourage clubs to apply for funding and make sure they receive it as well as find creative ways to use it to engage with their members as well as the greater Cal Poly community.

If elected my utmost goal would be to further diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts on campus. As a Hispanic student, I understand the challenges of being a minority in the realm of higher education and will strive to make ASI, in addition to our campus as a whole, a more welcoming space for students of all intersectional backgrounds.

Tanner Schinderle - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: he/him

Major: Political Science  | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement:

Hey, Cal Poly! My name is Tanner Schinderle, and I am a Political Science major hoping to represent you on the Board of Directors. Student Government has always been a passion of mine because of my love for the community and a desire to serve those around me. I believe diversity is our greatest strength and having voices heard makes our community a better place. I want to give back to a place that has already given so much to me. I will use my own learned experiences as well as emphasize each of your voices in every way I can by using the skills I have developed to advocate and serve on your behalf. Understanding our population’s diverse needs to ensure a more inclusive campus will always be one of my top priorities. I will always advocate for increased resources and access to safe spaces because it is crucial to the development of our community as a whole. Having served in the ASI Executive Staff this year, I’ve had the experience of addressing the unique efforts and student needs on campus. Moving forward, I will use this knowledge to push forward our campus culture. Representing the student voice throughout our community would be an honor I will never forget throughout my time in the position. I will always be open to talk in hopes of letting every student have a voice.

Mason Ambrosio - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: He/Him/His

Major: Journalism | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement:

Hello! My name is Mason Ambrosio and I’m a first-year journalism major from Thousand Oaks, California with minors in Global Politics, Media Arts, Society, and Technology (MAST), and Political Science. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, soccer, and hiking. Since coming to Cal Poly, I’ve gotten very involved with the campus and the surrounding community. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: I’m a Founding Father for the Fraternity Delta Sigma Phi where I serve as the DEI chair, elected Inter-Housing Council (IHC) Senator for Sierra Madre on both the DEI and Dining Committees, a certified PULSE Peer Educator, and a member of the ASI Executive Staff.
If elected to the Board of Directors, I will work towards advocating for the voices of all CLA students. To start, if elected, I would be the first non-political science student on the CLA Board of Directors in three years. This, paired with my extensive student government experience in high school, would allow me to bring a unique and impactful perspective to the Board. Using this, I will help keep students informed about matters that impact them and truly represent the needs and wants of all CLA students.

I hope to soon work at Mustang News and potentially intern for the City of San Luis Obispo as a social media manager.

Katelyn Nightengale - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: She/Her

Major: Communication | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement:

Hi! My name is Katelyn Nightengale, and I am a second-year Communication major. I have two minors in the STS (Science, Technology, and Society) concentration, including ‘Ethics and Public Policy’ (EPP) and ‘Gender, Race, and Culture’ (GRC), as well as a minor in Event Planning and Experience Management.

Outside of class, I am a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, serving as the Panhellenic Affairs Vice President.

Since I was young, I have always had a passion for leadership and serving my community. Within these pastimes, I found the importance of fostering a student culture of transparency, understanding, and representation.

Since being at Cal Poly, I’ve noticed a distinct feeling among students. This is a disconnect from the problems we see on campus. Many of us have our own opinions and perspectives on the issues that impact our everyday lives but don’t know how to address them. It’s frustrating to recognize these needs around us without feeling like we have a voice. As your ASI representative, I will aid in this process by asking questions, recognizing our needs as students, and identifying what we want and how to get there.

When creating positive change, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion must be at the core of our efforts. Within my studies in GRC, I believe in the importance of this and recognize where Cal Poly may fall flat as a PWI. I believe that each individual deserves the representation and amplification of their needs and wants as students of Cal Poly.

Maya Fornera - College of Liberal Arts

Pronoun: She/Her

Major: History | College: College of Liberal Arts

Candidate Statement:

Hi everyone! My name is Maya Fornera, and I am currently a first-year history major hoping to minor in Law and Society! I am from Sacramento, California and enjoy working out, reading, being outdoors and spending time with friends. I was a captain for my high school tennis team, and it showed me how important leadership, morale and teamwork are for the wellbeing of a community, as well as how much work goes on behind the scenes. I currently play recreationally at Cal Poly, and I joined chess club this year in order to push myself to learn something new, which has been very rewarding. I have had such a positive experience so far being a part of ASI Executive Staff and meeting so many wonderful people. I want to enable other students across Cal Poly to have similar experiences. As a first-year, I’ve definitely dealt with lonliness and feeling out of place, as well as feeling disconnected from everyone. This is EXTREMELY common for many students across Cal Poly. One of my largest goals is to make sure that all students across the campus have opportunities to connect with others and feel included and accepted. Community and connections are incredibly important for students in a new environment, which I hope to foster those through a position on Board of Directors. Being a voice of the students, understanding the troubles they are going through and being able to do something to help is incredibly important for me.

I believe that the most important aspect of leadership is being receptive. As a representative I will be a keen listener to students issues, critiques, and ideas. As students we shape the environment, and I know that my actions will reflect the desires of the student body. I am a hardworking person and persistent in the face of challenges. Nothing deters me from the pursuit of my goals. My goal is to provide students with a more enjoyable time here at Cal Poly. Remember to vote for Emma, she’ll hunt for solutions.

My ultimate goal is to one day become a Congressman, advocating for the interests of the state I hold dear to my heart. Hi, my name is Trent Counter and I am a Business Administration major from Orange County, California. I feel fortunate to be a student at Cal Poly and want to use this opportunity to create a welcome environment on campus, provide a voice for the priorities of the student body, and further the learn-by-doing mission of the university.

The experience I have gained on campus thus far includes serving as the Vice President of Operations on my community’s Inter-Housing Council, where I have been responsible for administrative duties surrounding financial management, record-keeping, and council correspondence. This experience has helped me understand the importance of creating an engaging and safe living environment for fellow students.

I have also joined Cru Cal Poly since being on campus. Being a part of this religious organization has helped me realize we need to give opportunities to all groups on campus to be represented and express their views regardless of their background or needs. President Armstrong’s goal of increasing diversity within Cal Poly is something all organizations, including ASI, must find ways to foster.

My leadership experience within Boy Scouts of America and youth ministry at Saddleback Church has taught me the type of servant leadership I believe is critical for successful ASI representation.

Outside of my work with these organizations and many clubs on campus, I also enjoy spending time with friends, playing drums, and other outdoor activities such as snowboarding, hiking, and camping.

Dylan Marino - Orfalea College of Business

Pronoun: he/him

Major: Business Administration | College: Orfalea College of Business

Candidate Statement:

Coming in to college, my biggest concern was that I wasn’t going to be able to make friends and establish these lifelong connections that are very normalized among the adult world. Through the combination of school clubs, Week of Welcome events, and ASI activities, I found a group that I have similar interests with but most importantly—I can be myself with them. I want to be a voice of advocacy for these people who may of not had the same opprotunity that I had, as well as for future class years at Cal Poly.

I’ve held various leadership positions throughout my life where I’ve been responsible for bringing together large groups of people with diverse interests and upbringings. It is through these experiences bringing people together where I have gained hard skills of leadership, charisma, patience, and empathy. Taking on the role of board of directors will help provide me the platform that I need to continue bringing people together, and eventually reach the long term goal of helping everyone at Cal Poly find their own community.
