Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Goals
- Establish an ASI core value in support of ASI’s commitment to inclusive excellence.
- Create Inclusive Excellence curriculum for ASI full-time staff, student staff, and Student Government members that provides both in-person and virtual training opportunities.
- Incorporate diversity and inclusiveness into new programs, initiatives and in the development and revision of policies and procedures.
- Identify and implement strategies to improve workplace climate.
- Create an infrastructure for communicating ASI values, goals, and progress toward inclusive excellence to ASI staff and the Cal Poly community.
Advancements
- Goal 1: The DEI Working Group reviewed ASI’s core values and the values statements of many other universities. The working group developed a value statement for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and made updates to past values to reflect ASI’s commitment to inclusive excellence.

- Goal 3: Identifying documents that can be updated to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations prior to approval. i.e., ASI professional staff proposal template, Student Government Project Approval form, and budget narratives.
- Provide training for full-time staff on changes to ASI Proposal Template that reflect addition of diversity, equity and inclusion considerations.
- Identify how to infuse DEI information into the Student Government Project Approval form.
- Goal 4: Identify and implement strategies to improve the workplace climate
- DEI working group meets bi-weekly and serves as a forum for discussing current workplace climate and any concerns for staff working conditions.
- Executive Director provides monthly written communication with full-time staff regarding departmental updates, COVID-19 pandemic health and safety impacts, and hosts a monthly coffee talk with staff to discuss organizational priorities and field questions from staff.
