Mustang Mile

ASI Events and WITH US present the 9th Annual Mustang Mile! For the first time ever, the Mustang Mile is going virtual and will offer participants a variety of ways to take part in this important Cal Poly tradition held in honor of Carson Starkey. Whether you run, walk, hike, bike, wheel, swim, or rollerskate — starting March 29, register through the Cal Poly Ticket Office to complete the 5k of fun your way, anytime April 17–23!

Student tickets are $10 for an individual and $30 for a group of 4. Community tickets are $20 for an individual, and $60 for a group of 4. The first 220 people to register will get a limited-edition swag bag with a Mustang Mile 2021 t-shirt, a Mustang Mile drawstring bag, stickers, and more.

Mustang Mile is held in honor of Carson Starkey, a Cal Poly student who passed away in 2008 from alcohol poisoning after a fraternity hazing incident. The event promotes the mission and message of Aware Awake Alive, a national education and awareness campaign started by Scott and Julia Starkey to prevent future alcohol-related tragedies. Funds raised will benefit the WITH US Center for Bystander Intervention at Cal Poly, which manages the Aware Awake Alive program.

Mustang Mile seeks to provide health and wellness resources that will educate students on the signs of alcohol poisoning and the dangers of binge drinking to empower them to take action and help others in harmful situations. The 2021 Mustang Mile Virtual 5k is presented by ASI Events and WITH US in collaboration with the City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation, Campus Health & Wellbeing, Cal Poly Recreation Center, Friday Night Live, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and the WITH US Center for Bystander Intervention at Cal Poly.

Pick up for swag bags will be held for students on-campus at the ASI Business Services window, outside of the Cal Poly Recreation Center (Building 43) starting on Monday, April 12. Pickup will be available Monday and Wednesday 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday 1:00–4:00 p.m. The Business Services window is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Community member swag bag pick up will be available at California Fresh Market, 771 Foothill Blvd. in San Luis Obispo, on Friday, April 16 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Face coverings and physical distancing required at bag pickup.

Mustang Mile optional courses will be available on-campus for students and throughout San Luis Obispo for community members. Contact ASI Events at asievents@calpoly.edu for more information.
