Fire Sprinkler Installation to Impact University Union Facilities

|

Beginning on Nov. 11, 2022, a new fire sprinkler system will continue its installation in the Julian A. McPhee University Union. As a student hub on campus, the University Union serves hundreds of students and campus community members every day while maintaining a responsibility to uphold its guests’ safety.

In order to uphold this responsibility, ASI is excited to move on to the next phase of the installation of a modernized fire sprinkler system that will fortify the facility’s safety features. This five-phase project began in winter quarter 2022 with a four-and-a-half-year project timeline; this current phase of the project and its associated impacts are estimated through winter quarter 2023.

ASI chose to complete this phase of the project during fall 2022 to maximize the amount of work being done during both Thanksgiving and winter breaks. This project’s progression is essential to ASI as we prepare to support the campus with alternative study locations prior to the renovation and closure of the Robert E. Kennedy Library in June 2023.

Beginning Nov. 11, 2022 — and through winter quarter 2023 — the second floor of the University Union will see significant impacts as ASI enhances the facility. Conference rooms, professional workspaces, and lounges will see intermittent closures during construction. ASI and facility staff are working hard to keep several areas of the UU open for use — including Chumash Auditorium, the second-floor restrooms, and general study space. For a detailed list of impacts, please visit the Facility Projects webpage. If these closures impact a future facility reservation, please reach out to ASI Facility Reservations or University Scheduling.

Through winter quarter 2023, ASI staff and several associated services will be relocated to alternate locations on campus. This includes ASI Student Government, ASI Club Services, and the ASI Business Office; Cal Poly’s Student Affairs services and offices currently located within UU 217 will also be relocated. To guarantee the campus community’s access to services and resources, ASI is coordinating a large-scale communication plan including website updates, social media pushes, targeted emails to impacted parties, and more.

On Oct. 31, all services related to ASI Club Services and will be offered at the Cal Poly Recreation Center’s ticket office; additionally, On Monday, Nov. 14,  the ASI Business Office’s services will also be located in the ticket office. Cal Poly’s Safer will operate out of Campus Health & Wellbeing at the Health Center (Building 27).

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we improve our facilities to better meet the needs of students and the Cal Poly community. To stay up to date, follow along with this installation and ASI’s latest facility projects.
