ASI Board of Directors Endorse H.R.6 — American Dream and Promise Act of 2021

|

At the April 7, 2021 ASI Board of Directors meeting, the board approved an endorsement of the American Dream and Promise Act of 2021, which was voted on and passed by the US House of Representatives on March 18, 2021. The purpose of this bill is to provide a ten-year “conditional permanent resident” status for Dreamers, including DACA recipients, that would shield them from deportation, allow them to work lawfully in the United States, and allow them to travel outside the country.[1]

Member of the Board, Ricardo Chavez Guerrero, strongly supported the Board of Director’s endorsement of H.R.6, stating that, “It is important to support this to show our undocumented community at Cal Poly that there is hope for immigration reform. Our Chancellor, Joseph Castro, took a stance in support of H.R.6 which helped the board move forward with this endorsement as well. All in all, there’s a lot of work to be done to support our undocumented students at Cal Poly, and this endorsement is one small piece of the puzzle.”

The endorsement of H.R.6 by the Board of Directors has been sent to Jeffrey D. Armstrong, University President, and Justin Wellner, Director of Government Relations. The passage of the American Dream and Promise Act is also supported by CSU Chancellor, Joseph I. Castro. The Board of Directors hopes that with this endorsement, the undocumented students in the Cal Poly community feel supported by their student representatives and can look forward to bipartisan support of American Dreamers.
